The latest from the Maine AFL-CIO Labor Reading Group. Come meet the author. This book generated some great discussion in the group.

Join the Scontras Center and the Maine AFL-CIO Labor Reading Group for a special evening with bestselling author Joan C. Williams.

Earlier this year, the ME AFL-CIO Labor Reading Group read Williams's book, Outclassed: How the Left Lost the Working Class and How to Win Them Back. Now, we're excited to welcome her for an engaging discussion on class culture, the changing nature of the American working class, and what these shifts mean for anyone interested in building a stronger labor movement.

What does it mean to be "working class" today? Is class primarily about economic position, education, culture, or identity? Or some combination of all of these? Williams will explore how class shapes our workplaces, politics, and everyday interactions.

Joan C. Williams is an internationally recognized scholar of social inequality, a distinguished professor of law, and the author of numerous books on class, gender, and work. Her research has influenced conversations on labor, economic inequality, and political polarization across the United States.

Don't be fooled by hidden-money ads misrepresenting who Troy Jackson is. We endorse Troy #1 for governor. His record for a long time now show his positions on this issue to be what he says they are.

A really nice evening celebrating the murals at the Local 14 Solidarity center. I misplaced my phone for a chunk of the evening, so if you took some good photos, please be in touch either here or directly with Cynthia.

Come celebrate our history and our future. May Day 2026 at the Local 14 Solidarity Center in Jay. This will be the first big public event at the hall since the renovations began, and is an event not to be missed.

On May Day, 2026, the Western Maine Labor Council will celebrate the installation of the digital replica of the Local 14 Strike Mural, which adorned the outside of the Local 14 union hall for nearly 40 years through and following the strike. The original mural has been restored and installed inside the hall and a digital replica now adorns the outside.

We are excited to gather to celebrate and dedicate and rededicate the murals on May Day (May 1), 2026. The public is invited to join us for food, speakers, mingling, and celebration. We've also designed a beautiful t-shirt that will be available for sale.

Event will open at 5:00 with light snacks, mingling, and opportunities to tour the hall. Formal program will begin at 5:30 and will be followed by a meal together and more mingling and touring.
