General information

A housing cooperative is formed when people join together to own and control the buildings in which they live. Residents buy shares or a membership in the co-op, similar to buying stock. The cooperative owns the building, land, and any common areas and members have full decision-making power like they would if they owned their own house. Members pay a fixed amount each month that covers the mortgage, property taxes, insurance, maintenance, and reserves. Costs are typically less than either rental or single-family housing in the same block or neighborhood.
