How do we inspire the next generation to connect with history?

This week, Maine MILL brought educators together for an evening of learning, conversation, and exploration ahead of the arrival of a rare 1776 printing of the Declaration of Independence.

As we prepare to welcome this extraordinary piece of American history to Lewiston, we’re reminded of the important role educators play in connecting the past with the present.

Some memories deserve to be preserved. Others remind us why we must never forget.

In the weeks following October 25, 2023, hundreds of hand-carved pumpkins lined the streets outside Just-In-Time Recreation in Lewiston. Each was a gesture of remembrance, love, and solidarity from a community navigating unimaginable loss.

As time passed, the pumpkins began to deteriorate, but the meaning behind them remained.

Through the efforts of Auburn-based artist Tanja Hollander, Michael Vickery of STEAMfruit, and the Umaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center, ten of these pumpkins were preserved through 3D scanning and printing, transforming temporary tributes into lasting symbols of remembrance.

Now part of Maine MILL’s October 25, 2023 Memorial and Archive, these pumpkins represent more than an extraordinary collaboration between art, technology, and preservation. They are a testament to the compassion, resilience, and collective memory of our community.

As we approach the third commemoration of October 25, we invite you to visit the memorial, reflect on the lives forever changed, and experience this meaningful installation.

What stays with you after an exhibition ends?

As A Common Bond: The Brick Journal is in its final weeks on view, we asked members of the Maine MILL team to reflect on what they learned, what surprised them, and the stories that stayed with them.

From the people who built Maine’s brick making industry to the communities and traditions shaped around it, the exhibition offers a deeper look at a history that is both deeply local and connected to a much larger story.

Look up when you enter the atrium at Maine MILL and you’ll find Mill River Rambler, a vibrant installation by Maine artist Charlie Hewitt

Suspended within the museum’s soaring industrial architecture, the work brings together bold color, illuminated forms, and playful symbols, creating a striking contrast between the historic mill setting and Hewitt’s contemporary visual language.

Mill River Rambler is part of the experience of Maine MILL, where art, history, industry, and creativity come together in unexpected ways.

Tomorrow, October 8 at 11am, join guest curator Alexis Iammarino Alexis Iammarino for a special curator-led tour of the exhibition. Hear directly from Alexis about the artists and their work, the ideas that shaped the exhibition, and the connections woven throughout A Common Bond.

It’s an opportunity to experience the exhibition through the curator’s perspective and discover details, stories, and artistic choices you may not have noticed on your first visit.

Educators, this evening is for you. Come explore, connect, and discover new ways to bring Maine’s stories of work, innovation, and community to your students.

Join us Tuesday, October 13 from 6–7 PM for Educator Night at Maine MILL. The evening is co-sponsored by the Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators, with members on site to share more about their support for local public education.

Educator Night is free for all teachers, and refreshments will be provided.

This October, history comes to Lewiston.

From October 15–17, Maine MILL will welcome a rare Dunlap Broadside copy of the Declaration of Independence, offering our community the extraordinary opportunity to see one of America’s founding documents up close. Admission to view the Declaration and visit the museum is free for these three days but tickets are strongly encouraged.

Join Maine MILL and Lewiston Public Library for this special book club experience. Enjoy a private viewing of a rare Dunlap Broadside copy of the Declaration of Independence, followed by an engaging discussion of The Hamilton Affair by Elizabeth Cobbs.

Friday, October 16, 11:00-11:30am – Student Presentation of the National Anthem and Declaration of Independence
Experience the Declaration of Independence through the voices of Lewiston students. Join us for a special student presentation featuring a performance of the National Anthem by the Lewiston High School Chamber Singers, followed by a read-aloud of the Declaration of Independence by sixth-grade students from Montello Elementary School.

Friday, October 16, 5:00-6:30pm – The Declaration of Independence: An Inspiring Riddle” Historian Panel Discussion
What makes the Declaration of Independence so powerful—and why does its meaning continue to inspire us more than 250 years later? Join us for an engaging evening of conversation as Elliot Epstein moderates a panel of historians and scholars from Bates College, Bowdoin College, and the University of Maine.

Saturday, October 17, 1:00-2:00pm – A Revolutionary Storytime! Read aloud and Design Challenge
Join the Lewiston Public Library and Maine MILL for a special storytime featuring John, Paul, George and Ben, a playful tale inspired by the American Revolution. After the story, young historians can try their hand at writing like they did in 1776—with feather quills and ink!

Join us at Maine MILL on October 4 for an Artist Dialogue with featured artists from A Common Bond.

This special hybrid conversation brings together Studio Shane Charles, E. Saffronia Downing, ⍝⍝⍝, Alexis Iammarino, luis vasquez la roche, , and Jennifer Schmidt to explore the ideas, materials, and stories behind their work.

A Common Bond begins with something familiar: the brick. Throughout the exhibition, artists consider brick and clay not only as materials, but as starting points for abstraction, critique, memory, and storytelling. During this dialogue, hear directly from the artists about their individual approaches and the possibilities they see within this everyday material.

Printed by hand, preserved through time.

Maine MILL’s collection of silk screens offers a glimpse into the tools, techniques, and craftsmanship behind an important chapter of Maine’s textile and manufacturing history. Before today’s digital processes, designs were transferred by hand through screens, transforming ink, color, and pattern into finished textiles.

These objects tell the story of the skilled hands, creative processes, and working communities that helped shape Maine’s industrial identity.

On November 12, 2026, Indigo Arts Alliance and the Maine Museum of Innovation, Learning and Labor invite you to experience "(E)mergence", an immersive exhibition examining the global histories and contemporary reverberations of industrialization, labor, and the environmental impact of textile production.

Featuring four Indigo Arts Alliance alumni, "(E)mergence" showcases work by Rosalba Breazeale ’23 David C. Driskell Fellow; Stephen Hamilton ’25 Mentorship AiR; Eleanor Kipping ’25 Mentorship AiR; and Liz Rhaney ’23 Mentorship AiR. Together, these artists present bodies of work informed by archival research, material exploration, and fiber-based contemplation that complicates our relationships to clothing, textile goods, and the plants from which they are derived.

Maine MILL and Indigo Arts Alliance share a commitment to exploring people, place, creativity, and community, and to expanding the ways we understand Maine’s industrial and cultural history. This collaboration brings together Maine MILL’s mission to explore the stories that shape Maine, with Indigo Arts Alliance’s mission of amplifying black and brown artists, stories, and histories.
