Safe Voices

Safe Voices Safe Voices is the domestic violence and s*x trafficking resource center serving Androscoggin, Oxford, and Franklin counties.

We are a proud member of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence. Safe Voices, previously known as the Abused Women's Advocacy Project, was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1977. The project began as a response to a critical need for emergency shelter: abused women and their children needed a safe place to stay. In 1977, our community struggled with addressing the needs of bat

tered women and children who were not safe. There was no place for them to go, no low-income housing, and no federal or state monies for domestic violence. Four women from Androscoggin County went to Massachusetts to learn about the state's efforts to help battered women. From there, Safe Voices was born with two families accepting women into their homes. In 1979, Safe Voices opened the emergency shelter with a total of four staff, due in part to an act to appropriate funds for emergency shelters and services for victims of domestic violence. Over the years, the shelter moved many times, and once it was burned down and much was lost. Currently, Safe Voices operates the only shelter and support services for battered women in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties. Since 1977, Safe Voices's four-fold mission--providing emergency and support services to victims of domestic violence, promoting ways to foster healthy relationships, educating the community about the seriousness and prevalence of this crime, and working toward social change so that communities no longer tolerate this abuse--has developed into a strong safety net for victims of domestic abuse seeking support, assistance, and a life free from the threat of further abuse. In addition to providing emergency shelter, Safe Voices has a network of local community-based offices in Farmington, Lewiston, Norway/South Paris and Rumford. These local offices provide one-on-one support, support groups, children's services, advocacy, information and referral, court advocacy, transporting and accommodation for shelter, community education and professional trainings.

This is why prevention education is SO important! Safe Voices offers prevention education for youth to learn about healthy relationships, boundaries, and respect, with the hope that each student in those sessions will have more tools to stop abuse before it starts. But we're here when they do encounter abuse, too. In today's Mission Moment, a Safe Voices advocate shares how they and the Safe Voices educator came together with a teenager and her mom to pursue a Protection From Abuse order following some intense teen dating violence she had experienced. The advocate shared:

“This month, I supported a mother who was filing a Protection From Abuse order on behalf of her teenage daughter who had experienced severe teen dating violence. Over the course of two PFA hearings, I was able to facilitate an agreement for a 2-year final PFA order that included every stipulation the survivor and her mother needed to feel safer. The teenage survivor and I also met with the Safe Voices educator to provide education and resources on teen dating violence.”

Today's Mission Moment comes from one of our Safe Voices courtroom advocates -- advocates who help survivors navigate court processes and process the often heavy emotional toll those processes might have on a survivor. The advocate shared:

"This month, one of our shelter residents was planning to attend the arraignment and sentencing of her abuser. A Safe Voices court advocate was able to connect with her at shelter and talk about what to expect at the hearing. The survivor was able to provide a victim impact statement to the court. The survivor shared that it felt good to share her opinion with the court, and she was incredibly thankful to have an advocate’s support throughout the process and at the arraignment.”

If you've attended one of the performances of Grandma Gatewood Took A Walk at The Public Theatre this week, you may have seen some familiar faces! Since the play discusses some themes around domestic abuse, the Theatre asked Safe Voices to join them by setting up an informational table, chatting with attendees at performances, and taking part in the talkback after the Sunday performance. We're so grateful for organizations that take such a thoughtful approach to material that may bring up difficult feelings for attendees, and we were honored to attend.

There are so many amazing things happening in our communities to come together and help our neighbors. Last week, Safe Voices was able to visit Fairy Tails Rescue, a local animal rescue organization, and Maine Needs, a statewide nonprofit connecting Mainers with basic necessities. At Fairy Tails, we picked up cat litter and cat food, and at Maine Needs, we picked up clothing and basic necessities, and each pickup will be used to stock the shelves in our Free Boutique for Survivors.

Partnerships like these help Safe Voices do our work more holistically and make sure we're providing for as many survivor needs as we possibly can! 💜

We have been so excited and honored to work with Maisy and her mom in setting up this school supply and toy drive! Maisy wanted to do something to support kiddos who are affected by domestic abuse or exploitation, and so we brainstormed together and came up with a toy and school supplies drive! These items will go such a long way in helping survivors and their kiddos get ready for the school year and bring joy and fun into their homes! You can support Maisy's effort by shopping from her list here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/Y7F779N6USXY?ref_=wl_share

In addition to all the services we provide, do you know what survivors tell us they need? A minute to breathe. They need a good night's sleep. They need a space that can feel relaxing. And they need to stretch their dollars. We would LOVE some help stocking self-care items in our Free Boutique to make these things a bit easier for survivors right now.

Our advocates put together a list of what survivors have said they need, and you can shop from the Self Care Supply Drive list here: https://a.co/08cTBxlp

Thank you for considering a donation of this kind! And please feel free to share this list with your friends and loved ones if they don't follow us!

The Survivor Storytellers lending library keeps growing! Our Survivor Storytellers group meets monthly to learn about trauma-informed storytelling skills to help survivors who want to tell their story and do so in a way that doesn't re-traumatize them. The facilitators of the group have created a lending library of books that group members can borrow to see other examples of stories that deal with issues of domestic abuse, trafficking, or exploitation. Occasionally, books that don't deal directly with those issues are also added if it uses a particular writing tool we've been learning about. This month, we added copies of The Correspondent by Virginia Evans for its use of "epistolary storytelling" -- storytelling through letters.
