The Corner

The Corner The Corner is a monthly storytelling event in Lewiston/Auburn, Maine. Come listen. Come tell. Every good story is much the same. And so it will be at this corner.

One literal definition of a corner is that it's an intersection where two streets come together. If you're going in one direction, a corner is a place where you can turn to go a different way. It's also a place where you might unexpectedly encounter someone coming from a different direction. It goes one way for a while and then, often surprisingly, it turns a corner to go a different way. Or it re

aches a point--a corner--where it brings the reader or listener or protagonist into contact with someone unexpectedly. In many neighborhoods, corners are also places where people gather. As they gather, one thing they do is tell stories. The Corner is a monthly night of storytelling, most of it via an open mic. In much the same style as The Moth's StorySLAM, we feature stories in our style of SLAM (that's Stories in Lewiston/Auburn, Maine, of course). They'll all short, true, first-person stories. Join us at Guthries Cafe at 115 Middle Street, in Lewiston, the second Thursday of the month from September to May.

The Corner in March: Lucky Charms
This month’s theme is “Lucky Charms.” May the luck of the Irish be with you! This March at The Corner we’re celebrating what it means to be lucky. Do you have a story about a time of extraordinary good fortune? Was there an object that contributed to your luck: A four leaf clover, a rabbit’s foot, a lucky penny, or maybe something less traditional like a t-shirt, a rock, or a breakfast cereal? Of course, there’s not always a rainbow or pot of gold at the end of every story, so feel free to tell about a time when lady luck left you high and dry.

As always, the themes at The Corner are just a starting point, an opportunity to take a story idea in any direction. There’s no luckier place to try your hand at storytelling than The Corner. Have fun with it! Just come to The Corner: Come listen. Come tell. You might get lucky!

Dear Friends of the Corner,

May 9th will be the last event of our regular 2023-2024 season, though we do have great news - we'll be back in June for a special Pride edition of the Corner (stay tuned)!

The theme for our May event is “Best Laid Plans.”

A plan is like a story we tell ourselves about the future: a story for a day, a decade, a life. Yet often, these stories take twists. Tell us about how the unexpected interrupted your routine - the crash, the weather, the surprise visit.

We are currently recruiting storytellers, so email us at [email protected] if you want to share.

Some story ideas: when was the last time you were seriously late for work, a wedding, a performance? How did that play out?

Did someone get in the way of your plans? Was the result better or worse than you expected?

Plans are also about power, relationships, and communication: We make plans for other people all the time, or try to. Were you ever a part of someone else’s plans, with or without your knowledge, with or without your consent? What about your plans for your relationships, friendships, and family?

As always, take our theme descriptions as a starting point, but don't let them limit you. We invite stories that invert this theme in creative ways and go in unexpected directions.

This month’s theme is “Lucky Underpants.” In the words of Calvin, from Bill Watterson’s comic Calvin and Hobbes: “Some days, even my lucky rocketship underpants don’t help.”

Tell a story of a time when you “got lucky”--or when some luck made a difference, or WOULD have made all the difference…if only!

You may not have lucky rocketship underpants like Calvin, but is there anything that, when you put it on, makes you feel like a superhero? A blazer, a pair of socks––a piece of jewelry? An heirloom? Did you have a stuffed animal you brought everywhere as a kid? Tell us a story about an object of power in your life.

Sometimes a person can be your good luck charm. Who do you call before a job interview?

Do you have any traditions or habits that bring you luck? A meal that you cook to get you in the right frame of mind? A certain route that you drive to the doctor’s office?

As always, take our theme descriptions as a starting point, but don't let them limit you. We invite stories that invert this theme in creative ways and go in unexpected directions.
