Sadness is a natural response to difficult experiences, disappointment, grief, loss, or change. It often comes and goes, sometimes feeling heavy and sometimes feeling more manageable. And sometimes sadness lasts a long time. That does not automatically mean someone is experiencing depression.
Depression can look different. It often lasts longer and can make everyday things, like getting out of bed, connecting with others, enjoying activities, or taking care of yourself, feel much harder.
For children, understanding the difference matters. When kids have language for what they are experiencing, they can better express their needs and emotions. It also helps them learn that sadness itself is not something to fear or fix.
Sometimes sadness needs time, space, and connection. Other times, when feelings become bigger, last longer, or begin getting in the way of daily life, extra support can help.
Sadness isn’t a problem to solve, but an emotion to move through. Sometimes support looks like trusted adults, counseling, grief groups, or simply having a space where heavy feelings are welcome. 💙
