Myth: When someone is grieving, they are depressed.

Truth: Grief and depression can look similar, but they are not the same. They can happen separately, or they can happen together.

Grief can bring deep sadness, exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep, and moments when everyday life feels heavier. Because of this, grief and depression can sometimes look similar from the outside.

Depression is more than grief alone. It is a mental health condition that can impact mood, energy, motivation, relationships, and day to day functioning. Some people experience depression before a loss, some after, and some never experience depression at all.

For children, understanding the difference matters. When kids have language for what they are experiencing, adults are better able to support their emotional needs and children are better able to express what feels hard.

Grief and depression are both important and both deserve support. Sometimes grief needs time, connection, and space. Sometimes extra support is needed. Knowing the difference helps us respond with care instead of assumptions. 💙

Sadness is a natural response to difficult experiences, disappointment, grief, loss, or change. It often comes and goes, sometimes feeling heavy and sometimes feeling more manageable. And sometimes sadness lasts a long time. That does not automatically mean someone is experiencing depression.

Depression can look different. It often lasts longer and can make everyday things, like getting out of bed, connecting with others, enjoying activities, or taking care of yourself, feel much harder.

For children, understanding the difference matters. When kids have language for what they are experiencing, they can better express their needs and emotions. It also helps them learn that sadness itself is not something to fear or fix.

Sometimes sadness needs time, space, and connection. Other times, when feelings become bigger, last longer, or begin getting in the way of daily life, extra support can help.

Sadness isn’t a problem to solve, but an emotion to move through. Sometimes support looks like trusted adults, counseling, grief groups, or simply having a space where heavy feelings are welcome. 💙
