Tonight, Wednesday the 23rd at 6pm is our Monthly Union meeting. Be there or be square.

Also, head over to Brotherhood Night from 4 to 6pm at Grid Iron beforehand for a quick bite to eat before the meeting. No one likes participating in collective bargaining on an empty stomach.

To the Nurses of Central Maine Medical Center,

On behalf of the members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 567, we write to express our strong solidarity with the Nurses of Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) as you begin to exercise your right to form a union.

As electricians, we have benefited firsthand from the protections our collective voices have given us in our Collective Bargaining Agreement. A Collective Bargaining Agreement allows the workers a true seat at the table to express their concerns on safety, compensation, and serving their community best. Workers are at their best when they are supported, protected and empowered.

The work done at CMMC requires dedication, expertise, and sacrifice. Your work, every day, on the front lines of healthcare, is core to our community. Nurses are with us on our most somber, our most hopeful, and our most joyous days of our lives. No matter the circumstance, no matter the day, and no matter the person, we can expect care and compassion for our friends, family and neighbors. You deserve a formal, and legally protected voice.

Taking that initial step towards forming a Union is never easy. It takes courage, conviction, and hope. Please know that as you continue taking those steps towards forming your union, the members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 567 will stand firmly behind you. With the long weekend coming up lets take a minute to look at some of the history of Labor Day and thank those that stood the line before us.

During the major economic depression of the early 1890s, the Pullman Palace Car Company cut wages in its factories. Discontented workers joined the American Railway Union (ARU), led by Eugene V. Debs, which supported their strike by launching a boycott of all Pullman cars on all railroads. ARU members across the nation refused to switch Pullman cars onto trains. When these switchmen were disciplined, the entire ARU struck the railroads on June 26, 1894. Within four days, 125,000 workers on twenty-nine railroads had quit work rather than handle Pullman cars.

Working people began organizing and bargaining collectively to advocate for better working conditions and wages and celebrated the first Labor Day in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. Following the deaths of 13 workers during the Pullman Strike in June of 1894, President Grover Cleveland made reconciliation with the labor movement a top priority of his administration, making Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894.
