What happens when your job makes you develop asthma and fracture ribs? This individual faced disbelief from supervisors and significant medical costs. Even after a professional diagnosis confirmed the workplace was the cause, returning to the environment felt impossible. Everything was on the line.

When Long COVID reduces someone's ability to work, the consequences do not stay contained to health.

Research shows that people with Long COVID are nearly twice as likely to fall behind on rent and nearly twice as likely to face eviction. 42% have reported food insecurity. 20% report difficulty paying rent.

For low-income households with no savings to draw on and no cushion to absorb income loss, a health crisis becomes a housing crisis becomes a food crisis, all at once.

These outcomes are documented. They are also preventable. The policy infrastructure that could interrupt this cycle exists. What is missing is the commitment to use it.

If you are a parent of a child with long COVID, you have probably noticed that no two kids seem to experience it the same way. New research published in Nature Communications may help explain why.

Scientists followed 74 children and teens with severe long COVID for up to three years, tracking nearly 200 health markers. They found that symptoms generally did not improve over time at the group level, and that heart and lung testing came back largely normal, suggesting the underlying causes lie elsewhere.

What they did find were shifting immune system patterns over time, a blood marker linked to nerve health that correlated with how functionally impaired children were, and differences based on whether a child had previously been infected with Epstein-Barr virus (the virus that causes mono).

The researchers conclude that pediatric long COVID is likely not one single condition, but several overlapping ones, each with its own biological signature. That is an important step toward more personalized treatment for kids who are still struggling years after their COVID infection.

Governments and health authorities are withholding crucial information about COVID-19 deaths, hospitalizations, and the risks of long COVID. This silence is dangerous, echoing the devastating reality that 'silence equals death'.

If you are a gig worker or independent contractor, you already know there is no paid sick leave, no employer disability coverage, no safety net for when your health prevents you from working.

Long COVID is making that gap devastating for hundreds of thousands of workers, disproportionately Black and Latino workers who are overrepresented in app-based gig roles. The financial distress associated with Long COVID can last up to three years. For workers with no benefits, that timeline is not survivable on its own.

The protections that would make chronic illness manageable exist for some workers and not for others. That is a policy choice. And it is a policy choice that can be changed.

Many parents have been reassured that COVID reinfections in children are no big deal, especially with omicron variants that tend to cause milder illness. New research published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases suggests we need to rethink that.

A large study using data from 40 U.S. children's hospitals found that kids and teens who got COVID a second time were more than twice as likely to develop long COVID compared to those experiencing their first infection. The risk of myocarditis was more than three times higher, and the risk of blood clots more than doubled.

Just as concerning: having had COVID before did not appear to protect children from developing long COVID after a second infection. The researchers describe the risk as cumulative.

This study used clinician-documented diagnoses from real medical records rather than surveys, making its findings particularly credible.

If you are a parent, pediatrician, or school health professional, this is important context for thinking about COVID prevention in children. Mild acute symptoms do not rule out lasting effects.
