CHEF GRANTS IN ACTION
Take Me Out to the Ballgame
The purpose of this grant was to provide students with a meaningful community-based instruction (CBI) experience while exposing them to a new leisure and recreational opportunity within their community. Attending a professional baseball game allowed students to develop important functional and social skills in a real-world setting, including following schedules, navigating a public venue, making purchases, practicing appropriate spectator behavior, and engaging with peers and community members. For many of our students, this was their first experience attending a live baseball game. You can become a Friend of Cape at: https://www.chef-cape.org

CHEF GRANTS IN ACTION
Embryology
The embryology grant gave 1st grade students the opportunity to explore life science through real-world, hands-on learning. Students observed the development of eggs and learned about animal life cycles, growth, habitats, and basic needs of living things. The experience encouraged curiosity, observation skills, scientific questioning, and responsibility while helping students make meaningful connections to science standards.

Through daily observations, discussions, journaling, and interactive activities, students developed a deeper understanding of how living things grow and change over time. The project also supported social-emotional learning by fostering teamwork, empathy, and care for living organisms.

The project also created valuable leadership opportunities for 2nd grade students by allowing them to share their past knowledge and experiences with current 1st graders. Through presentations and classroom visits, 2nd grade students strengthened their communication and public speaking skills while serving as role models and mentors. This cross-grade collaboration helped to build confidence, reinforces prior learning, and fosters a strong sense of community and excitement for science throughout the school. CHEF GRANTS IN ACTION
Kindness Empowers
The purpose of this grant is to plan a field trip for young girls to explore the history of Harriet Tubman. We will discuss the leadership qualities of Harriet and how we can use that in today's time. This grant gave a girls group from Rehoboth Elementary a different outlook on life and how, back in the day, even though people fought for things that were wrong, there are people like Harriet that fought for things that were right. The girls understood the time that Harriet lived in and how some of those qualities can be used in today's world. Students talked about reputation and how do we want people to view us. Students also talked about qualities for leadership and what we can do to stand up for what we believe in respectfully. You can become a Friend of Cape at: https://www.chef-cape.org

CHEF GRANTS IN ACTION
Cape to Paris 2026
This grant was used to offset the cost of district transportation to and from the Philadelphia International Airport in conjunction with this year's student trip to Paris, France. This was an opportunity for students to experience the language and culture that they study every day in class in the "real world" is of inestimable value - priceless! Students also make relationships and connections with their peers, their teachers and other adults involved in the program which they would not otherwise make. Finally, traveling allows them an understanding of other cultures and people that they don't have from within their own culture, and it allows them to view their own culture "from the outside" so to speak. These experiences are life-changing, especially for young people. You can become a Friend of Cape at: https://www.chef-cape.org

CHEF GRANTS IN ACTION
Science World Scholastic Magazine
The purpose of the grant was to make connections between science concepts and current events. For example, students learned about plate boundaries and the deepest parts of the ocean. They used the magazine as well as the website that came with it and learned about the Marianas trench, as well as the continental shelf. We also learned about volcanoes and found a new article about a recent discovery from Pompeii and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The students have also enjoyed seeing new articles, such as one about a flying car, and things that other teenagers are doing in science.
