Join the Lewes Public Library, Seaside Jewish Community, and the History Book Festival online on April 29th at 7pm for a conversation with Tracy Slater about her book, "Together in Manzanar." Seaside Jewish Community member Fran Saltzman will interview the author.

Elaine Yoneda was the child of Russian Jewish immigrants and the wife of a Japanese American man. On this war-torn morning, she was also a mother desperate to keep her young mixed-race son from being sent to a US concentration camp. Manzanar, near Death Valley, was one of ten detention centers where our government would eventually imprison every person of Japanese descent along the West Coast--alien and citizen, old and young, healthy and sick--or, in the words of one official, anyone with even "one drop" of Japanese blood.
Together in Manzanar tells the story of these painful choices and conflicting loyalties, the upheaval and violence that followed, and the Yonedas' quest to survive with their children's lives intact and their family safe and whole.

Tracy Slater, a Jewish American author, has published in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. She taught writing for over ten years in Boston-area universities and in men’s and women’s prisons throughout Massachusetts. She holds a PhD in English and American literature from Brandeis University. She lives with her family in her husband’s homeland of Japan.

The interviewer is Fran Saltzman, a long-time Seaside Book Group member.

Join us at Lewes Public Library or online on April 12th at 5pm for a “fireside chat” with author Rhae Lynn Barnes and Paul Sparrow!

The history of Blackface minstrel shows in the United States is shocking. Princeton historian Rhae Lynn Barnes has spent decades digging through archives and private collections to reveal the extraordinary extent to which the caricatured and dehumanizing depiction of formerly enslaved people was a staple of community entertainment for more than two centuries.

Author Rhae Lynn Barnes will join host Paul Sparrow for a conversation about her stunning new book, Darkology, and the damage it has done to generations of Americans.

Rhae Lynn Barnes is an assistant professor of American cultural history at Princeton University and the Sheila Biddle Ford Foundation Fellow at the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University.

The Fireside Chat series is organized and moderated by Paul Sparrow, a writer, historical consultant, and the former Director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. Before moving to the FDR Library, he was the Deputy Director and Senior Vice President at the Newseum in Washington, DC. He is the author of the book, Awakening the Spirit of America: FDR's War of Words With Charles Lindbergh—and the Battle to Save Democracy.

Attendance is free but will require registration. To register, follow the link in our bio to browseaboutbooks.com/events and click the button labeled, "Register."
