Happy Independence Day from the Lewestown Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution!

Today, we celebrate the birth of the United States of America and honor the brave Patriots whose courage and sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As we continue commemorating our nation's 250th Anniversary, we remember the extraordinary men and women who dared to dream of a free and independent nation. Their devotion to liberty, self-government, and the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence continue to inspire us today.

Here in Delaware—the First State—we take special pride in our Revolutionary heritage. From the historic streets of Lewes to the courageous actions of Patriots like Caesar Rodney, Thomas McKean, George Read, John Dickinson, and countless others, Delaware played a vital role in the founding of our nation.

The members of the Lewestown Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, are honored to preserve the stories of our Patriot ancestors, educate future generations, and ensure that the legacy of the American Revolution lives on.

As you celebrate with family and friends, may we all take a moment to reflect on the blessings of liberty and the responsibilities that come with preserving it for those who follow.

On Father's Day, the John Smoot Chapter Maryland SAR and the Lewestown Chapter Delaware SAR joint hosted a "Day at the Shorebirds" event. Over 30 members and "special" guests (DAR and CAR) came and enjoyed the outing. Special thanks to the John Smoot Chapter Color Guard for presenting colors and Delaware Society President Troy Foxwell for singing the national anthem before the game. You were even able to catch NSSAR Secretary General Allen Greenly having some fun with mascot during the game.

Grave Marking for John Burton

On May 14, 2026 the Lewestown Chapter marked Patriot Ancestor John Burton grave. A patriot who died in 1791, in the Burton Family Cemetery in Indian River Hundred. The small Burton family cemetery is owned by the Oak Crest Pond Homeowners Association. John Burton performed patriotic service by supplying cloth for the Delaware Regiment.
