The women's branch of the Army was created as an auxiliary unit in May 1942 and converted to active-duty status in July 1943. More than 150,000 women served as WACs during the war in noncombat roles. The WAC was disbanded in October 1978 and all units were combined with regular Army units.

♫♪♪ In the Mood … for music. ♫♪♪ This undated photo from the Delaware Public Archives shows the Sandunairs all-soldier dance band organized by Cpl. Stanley Ross at Fort Miles, with Pfc. Alfred Bora, Cpl. Robert Evans, Cpl. Vincent Nocerine, Pfc. Earl Werner and Cpl. Donald Belville.

Music played a powerful role on the home front and overseas during World War II. Nearly every American household owned a radio by December 1941. Song recordings and live performances were broadcast to millions in the United States and abroad. The music of the '40s raised troop morale and inspired people to support the war effort.

Show of force. Navy F4Us and F6Fs fly in formation over Tokyo Bay during surrender ceremonies in this archival photo taken Sept. 2, 1945. Japanese officials signed the documents that ended World War II on board the battleship USS Missouri (left foreground).

The 16-inch gun barrel on display at Fort Miles was on board the Missouri that day, the center gun in turret one, the lower forward turret. As the surrender ceremony ended, 450 carrier planes from the Third Fleet (some say 349 planes) passed in massed formation over the Missouri. A few minutes later, Army Air Forces B-29 bombers flew over.
