This morning--Sunday, April 19, 2026--Engine 2 hosted a hands-on vehicle extrication training for Stations 2 & 4 (North Zone) of the Wantagh Fire Department at the department's training facility (Station 6).
Members were guided through various disentanglement operations that are commonly required to safely extricate a patient entrapped within an auto. Members began the training with a refresher on vehicle anatomy, where key components of the vehicle directly involved in operations were identified and explained. These key components were labeled using red spray paint for easy identification.
From there, members spoke through the various different stages of extrication, and carried out the required tasks for each stage in sequential order as they would during an actual alarm. Members performed a size-up of the scene, stabilized the vehicle, protected the patient, conducted disentanglement operations (including: glass removal, "peel and peek", hazard identification and mitigation, hatchback removal, hood removal, door removal, roof removal, dashboard displacement), and completed the operation by extricating the dummy patient from the driver seat.
We appreciate the members that showed up and attended training this morning, and hope that all who participated enjoyed the training and more importantly, took away something from the training (and ideally learned something new). This training was made possible thanks to Ex-Captain Ed Cordova who donated the minivan to the department; thanks brother. It has become increasingly difficult to obtain vehicles to cut up and use for training, so whenever we get the opportunity, we take full advantage and ensure that we get the most out of it.
