Steve Knauss, of Spider Lake, Wisconsin , is a happy man with his new 1978 Sunfish sailboat. We detailed it today, put some speed wax on the hull, and repaired a couple things, then took it for its maiden voyage along with me in my Sunfish. It was fun having both boats out on the harbor at the same time. People came up later saying how nice it was to see the sails on the water, which is still pretty darn cold. Steve is a good friend and BBM! traveler from many tours. His Sunfish was owned by another good friend, Tom Kladzyk, who passed away from brain cancer. Tom would be pleased to know the boat is in good, appreciative hands and that it is being cared for and used. Tom loved sailing and many other outdoor pursuits.

I just found out that Super Dave Travis, who coordinated Sunfish Fleet #700 passed away in November of 2021. My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Barb, and family. Dave was a fine sailor, and a good friend to many people. For years, he set the race course and was the glue that held together the biweekly races throughout the summer. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of sailing. His leadership and spirit is appreciated and will be missed. I'll post his full obituary below. With Dave's absence, the future of the Fleet is uncertain as at this time no one is coming forward to continue it. Hopefully, one day, someone will continue this fun and proud tradition on Douglas Lake. Godspeed to Super Dave.

Some of us are still interested so let’s plan on us starting Sat. July 4th.

We probably won’t do every Sat. this year depending on interest level. More on that another time and I would be glad to have your input.

Please let me know if you received this and check BOTH your email and phone # are the correct.
If you don’t get a text and also this email then please send me an update.

Texting will once again be the main method of updating last minute changes unless you prefer an email.

Hope to see you on the water.
Please let me know if I forgot anyone.

It's a busy fall evening at the Lake Superior Brewing Company in Grand Marais. If You look close you can see Super Dave and Barb Travis moving through the crowd. They surprised me and invited me there to have a beer with them. They were camping bin Grand Marais. It was good to see them.

Sailing results...It certainly was a weird season with tons of cancellations and light air days.
When I crunched the numbers for the top sailors I found that Dana and Mike were a dead tie.
Mike sailed fewer races but was within a few total races of Tom Mertaugh.
So rather than split hairs to figure out how to break a tie I feel it’s best to give the first place trophy to both Mike and Dana.
So they can share who gets the trophy for half the year and then trade off!
Tom Mertaugh finished very strong and now he does well in light air. He had 4 firsts and 1 third in the last two race days in light air. So he gets the second place silver bowl.
I haven’t had time to figure out the remaining slots but as usual it’s close with Pete and Stuart and I’m not sure it’s that important. The important thing is everyone seemed to have a good time and everyone improved.
Otto and Dan Oldham were missed and Jerry was a busy guy.
Hope to see more of them next year.
Seems like we were all going different ways this last week, so no end of season party this year.

Thanks for sailing and keeping things going,
Super Dave Travis
