Free-use firewood available southeast of Flagstaff

Flagstaff, Ariz.— Free ponderosa pine firewood is available near Fay Canyon approximately 5 miles southeast of Flagstaff along Lake Mary Road for valid free-use permit holders.

About 300 cords of firewood are currently available and visible from the road, which includes full-length logs that are 10-14 foot long and neatly stacked near Sandy Canyon Trailhead.

Free-use firewood permits can be obtained at the Flagstaff Ranger Station or Forest Headquarters and allow up to five cords of wood per permit.

Permit holders are asked to keep safety in mind and be considerate of other forest visitors who are using the area and Sandy Canyon Trail.

Last week, a representative from Coyote Canyon Chapter, New Mexico, reached out to us requesting assistance with firewood for distribution to their community members. Without hesitation, we extended our resources to support their efforts and help provide firewood to more homes across the Navajo Nation.
We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate and continue strengthening kinship by ensuring our relatives stay warm during these cold months. This work is only possible because of the collective support, shared responsibility, and commitment to serving our communities.
Ahéhee’ to everyone who continues to stand with us in service to Dinétah. Together, we make a difference.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Defend Our Community’s first 2026 firewood distribution. We were happy to reconnect with families we’ve helped before and to build new kinship with those joining us for the first time.
Through the incredible teamwork of our volunteers and team members, we were able to provide 121 truckloads of firewood to homes across the Navajo Nation. We were especially grateful to see our amazing youngsters helping with loading, handing out pre-packaged kindling (chizh yazhi), and spending a meaningful day alongside their families.
This work is not without its challenges and obstacles. These are challenges we voluntarily take on to answer the calling of embracing ké and strengthening kinship within our communities. Each step, lesson, and obstacle reminds us why this work matters and why showing up for one another is so important.
A huge shoutout to all the volunteers who helped make this distribution run smoothly, efficiently, and with care. With every experience, we continue to learn new approaches that help us better prepare, engage, and serve as many people as possible.
Due to the limited amount of firewood available, we implemented a truck-only pickup limit. This allowed us to help everyone who came as the pile steadily grew smaller. Thank you all for understanding and respecting this decision.
We look forward to planning another distribution in the near future as we continue our collaboration with Woods For Life and Dakota Logging LLC to replenish our woodsite.
Please continue to support, encourage, and embrace positivity for those who make the time and commitment to help Dinétah (The People). Thank you again to everyone who stood with us, showed up, and continues to uplift our communities.
