We operate out of one station, protecting an approximate 70 square mile area. We have an ISO rating of 5 for those within 6 road miles of the station, and 1,000 feet of a hydrant or substantial water source. Our first due district includes Huntington north of the city limits, Lesage, Greenbottom, and parts of Ona and Glenwood. In recent years, we received an average of 750 alarms per year ranging from medical emergencies to structure fires. However, due to changes in dispatching procedures by our 911 center in 2018, that number decreased to 280. However, expanded automatic aid coverage has increased the number of alarms to 330 in 2025. We currently have 20 dedicated, hard working members and 5 civilian board of directors members led by Fire Chief David Ash. We operate 3 engines, 1 heavy rescue, 1 utility truck, 1 chief SUV, and 2 boats. 🚒 Hose Testing — An Important Part of Fire Service Readiness 🚒

Fire hose is one of the most important pieces of equipment we rely on at an emergency scene. When firefighters stretch a line, we expect it to perform when lives and property are on the line.

That’s why regular hose testing is so important. Testing helps identify damage, weaknesses, leaks, or other issues that may not be visible during routine inspections. Proper testing helps ensure our hose is capable of safely handling the pressures it may encounter on the fireground.

Today, Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department completed our annual hose testing. We want to thank all of our members who came out and assisted with the testing. Your time and dedication to keeping our equipment and department ready for the next call are greatly appreciated.

A special thank you to Matheny Fire & Emergency for conducting our hose testing and helping us ensure our equipment is ready to perform when we need it most.

Shout out to YMCA Kennedy Center for allowing us to use your parking lot this year.

🧯 Inspect it. Test it. Maintain it. Know your equipment.

Our firefighters train hard to be ready when the call comes in. Making sure our equipment is ready is just as important.

Take care of your equipment, and your equipment will be there when you need it most. 🚒🔥

🔥 FALL FIRE SEASON BEGINS OCTOBER 1 🔥

As we enter West Virginia’s Fall Fire Season, we want to remind everyone of the state’s outdoor burning laws, which are in effect October 1 through December 31.

đźš« NO OUTDOOR BURNING BETWEEN 7:00 AM AND 5:00 PM

🔥 Outdoor burning is permitted between 5:00 PM and 7:00 AM, but ALL FIRES MUST BE COMPLETELY EXTINGUISHED BEFORE 7:00 AM.

Please remember:

• Fires must be attended at all times.
• Maintain a minimum 10-foot safety strip around the fire, cleared of combustible materials.
• Never leave a fire unattended or smoldering.
• Use proper spark arrestors on equipment capable of producing sparks.
• If your fire escapes and causes a wildfire, you may be responsible for the cost of fire suppression and any damages.
• Violations of the burning law can result in fines of up to $1,000.

🍂 With dry leaves, grass, and other fuels becoming more susceptible to fire during the fall months, a small fire can quickly become a large wildfire.

PLEASE BURN RESPONSIBLY AND HELP US PROTECT OUR HOMES, COMMUNITIES, FIRE DEPARTMENTS, AND FORESTS.

đźš’ If you see a fire that has escaped control or a column of smoke from a specific location, call 911 immediately.

For more information, visit the West Virginia Division of Forestry.

đźš’ ANNUAL PUMP TESTING COMPLETED đźš’

The Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department conducted our annual pump testing on our apparatus.

Pump testing is a critical part of fire apparatus maintenance and firefighter safety. It allows us to verify that our pumps are capable of delivering the required water flow and pressure when we need them most. A pump failure on an emergency scene is not something we can afford, which is why routine testing is so important.

Annual testing also allows us to identify potential issues before they become problems on an actual fire scene and gives us performance data that can be compared from year to year. The NFPA calls for fire pump performance testing at least annually, as well as after certain major repairs or modifications.

Our crews work hard to make sure our equipment is ready to perform when our community needs us. You never want to find out your pump has a problem when you’re standing in front of a structure fire.

As of 9:00am this morning (August 5), the Ohio River Road VFD will no longer be dispatched on the regular, long-serving analog frequency.

All seven Cabell County volunteer fire departments will now be dispatched on a new digital simulcast channel.

Please check the post below from our 911 Center for more details.

Cabell County Completes Final Phase of Radio System Improving Area Coverage for Fire Departments

Cabell County, WV – The Cabell County Commission is pleased to announce the completion of the final phase of a new countywide Project 25 (P25) simulcast radio communications system, giving county volunteer fire departments a unified, modern communications platform.

The $4.5 million radio system provides enhanced interoperability, expanded coverage and improved reliability for emergency communications for volunteer fire departments throughout the county. Last month, Cabell County EMS and Sheriff’s Department went live with their upgraded communications channels.

One of the most significant improvements is that all county volunteer fire departments will now operate on a single countywide dispatch channel. This streamlined approach allows firefighters to communicate more efficiently during routine and large-scale incidents while freeing the legacy radio system to be dedicated exclusively to fireground operations.

“Separating dispatch communications from on-scene operations will reduce radio congestion and improve firefighter safety by ensuring communications remain clear and available when they are needed most,” Nazim Abbess, Cabell County 911 & Emergency Management Director said.

Additionally, the new system will improve coverage to areas of the county that previously had poor reception. Prior to this upgrade, responders would often see communication limitations, particularly in southern parts of Culloden, a critical vulnerability during emergencies.

“From the Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department’s perspective, this digital changeover will allow the fire departments to have better communications in areas where coverage was bad in certain areas.” Andrew Frazier, Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department’s Chief said.

The project was funded entirely through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) COVID-19 recovery funds. The implementation of the system marks one of the largest public safety communications upgrades in the county’s history and positions the county to meet the communications needs of emergency services for years to come.
