Leon Valley Historical Society Restoration of the Huebner-Onion Homestead and Stagecoach Stop The Huebner-Onion Homestead stands on six-lane Bandera Rd. In the 1930s, Judge John F.

(State Highway 16), its original site, at the historic center of the Leon Valley community. Since 2000, the half-acre homestead site has been owned by the 501(c)(3) non-profit Historical Society of Leon Valley. The homestead of early Leon Valley settler, Joseph Huebner, was the first stagecoach and wagon stop on the road from San Antonio to Bandera. Remarkably intact, the homestead buildings are i

mportant representative structures from the Early Texas period. Located on one-half acre, the complex include the 1862 two-story, limestone block homestead, and 1858 cookhouse, and a stacked stone barn circa 1870. Joseph Huebner acquired the property in 1858 and operated a ranch and stagecoach stop from 1858 to 1882. Joseph Huebner (1823-1882) is buried on part of the former family lands now accessible to the public. Onion and his wife Harriet acquired 39 acres of the Huebner property and the family continuously occupied the site until Harriet Onion’s death, in 1983. After her death, it was never occupied, and suffered from fires and vandalism. The property was purchased by Intown Suites in 1999, but after efforts by members of Society, Intown Suite gave the Homestead proper and its outlying buildings to the Society, and the City of Leon Valley leased the natural area to the Society.

Dear friends - as the sun dips low over the mesquite and the hill top glows gold in the last light, we gather with kin, beans on the stove and cornbread in the oven. Snow may not always visit Texas, but the warmth of family and neighbors, and a chorus of Christmas songs on the radio sure does. May your days be merry, your boots stay comfy, and your hearts stay big as the Lone Star sky this Christmas season!
