North County Land Trust North County Land Trust protects land and habitat for the people, plants, and wildlife of north central Massachusetts.

Through conservation, environmental stewardship, and programs, we seek to make our natural home healthy, happy, and welcome to all. NCLT fulfills its land conservation mission by facilitating land conservation projects that benefit landowners and communities, by its stewardship of public access conservation land and by promoting conservation through environmental education programs and nature hikes. We offer guided nature hikes on our conservation areas in Fitchburg, Gardner, Hubbardston, Princeton and Templeton. We also offer environmental education programs to children and families, in partnership with local schools and community groups.

Last Thursday evening, North County Land Trust held our Annual Gathering 🍂

Thank you to everyone who came out to Wachusett Mountain for the event! We are so fortunate and grateful to have such an engaged and exuberant community.

Ray Lyons is the 2026 recipient of our “You Rock" Volunteer of the Year Award!

A retired conservation lawyer, Ray joined NCLT's Land Committee early this year. He dove in immediately to advise us on land protection and land stewardship projects. Ray lent his technical expertise to help solve on-the-ground issues, made connections with contractors to assist us, and gave great guidance to help NCLT get things done the right way. We are so grateful for his thoughtful questions, diligent research, and expert guidance. Thank you, Ray!

The Westminster Cracker Festival is a free event featuring food and craft vendors, live music, kids activities, Wachusett b**r, and—of course—Westminster crackers.

From the smallest urban parks and community gardens to our largest rivers and forests, all of Massachusetts's natural spaces deserve protection. Because of a lack of funding, our state isn't protecting these outdoor spaces as it should. Let's secure dedicated funding for conservation by voting YES on Question 6!

This weekend, Sasquatch is enjoying the trails at Farandnear in Shirley!

The roots of the Appalachian Trail—an iconic trail network stretching over 2,197 miles from Maine to Georgia—perhaps trace back to Shirley. Benton MacKaye spent his childhood in the town, taking almost daily hikes into its surrounding hills and forests. Shirley kindled MacKaye’s love of nature and interest in conservation, and those lifelong passions inspired his 1921 vision of the Appalachian Trail.

Seek Sasquatch on Farandnear’s trails this weekend 👣 and imagine a young Benton MacKaye walking alongside you through the woods of Shirley.
