Our meeting last week was at the end of our local retreat and we had an assortment of completed quilts and quilt tops shared.

To explore quilting patterns, I have included a close up picture of some of the quilts so you can see the variety of quilt methods. There are a number of factors the quilter uses to decide how to quilt- their level of experience, the pattern of the quilt, the equipment available and of course personal preference. Some simply use “stitch in the ditch” - following the seam lines, some tie the layers together at corners in the pattern, some use free motion which is an all over randomness and some use a long arm machine. Long arm quilting is amazing - it is a meeting of 21st century technology with a centuries old art historically done by women so their family will survive. Enjoy!

We had 28 of our 32 members present this past week and 13 quilts were turned in to donate to Robins Nest. Some of these quilts we saw as quilt tops (just the pieced layer, no batting, back or quilting yet) at our previous meeting. It’s amazing how the binding and quilting pattern changes the look and brings it all together.

Here are the three quilts together that were all made from the same pattern of no waste on point. They end up being different based on the original layout of blocks, color selection, size of the blocks and the type of border that is added.

A quilt has its own story even as it is being created. (Read “The Keeping Quilt” by Patricia Polacco). We were recently notified of a yard sale where the people were trying to find new homes for their loved one’s fabric stash. From our point of view, we found the mother lode of beautiful colors and quality fabric! Some of that fabric is featured here already. Hopefully the sellers will see this and know that their fabric reached the right people! Enjoy!
