We are so excited to have Joanna with us this summer!🍀
Caldwell Extension Welcomes Intern
The NC State Extension Caldwell County Center is excited to welcome summer intern Joanna Hindman to the team this summer. The internship provides students with hands-on experience in community outreach, youth development, agriculture, and Extension programming while connecting classroom learning with real-world applications.
Joanna is currently studying Biological Engineering at North Carolina State University and hopes to pursue a career in consulting, wetland restoration, stream restoration, and environmental engineering.
“It was a great opportunity to work close to home and learn more about Extension and working with kids,” said Joanna. “It’s also been a great way to learn how engineers work with Extension.”
Throughout the summer, Joanna will assist with a variety of Extension programs and activities across Caldwell County, including 4-H youth programming and community outreach efforts.
After spending time at NC State and seeing Extension’s work firsthand, particularly irrigation systems and agricultural programs connected to engineering, Joanna became interested in learning more about how Extension serves communities across North Carolina.
“What has stood out to me so far is how many different people in the office do different things, but how it all ties together,” Joanna shared. In the Caldwell Extension Office, we have 3 agents in 3 different subject areas: Horticulture, Livestock, and 4-H Youth Development.
Joanna is especially looking forward to attending NC 4-H Congress this summer, where she will get tos how local youth how awesome NC State is, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of Extension opportunities available in Caldwell County.
Outside of academics, Joanna serves as a CALS Ambassador and participates in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Club at NC State. In her free time, she also enjoys needlepointing. A fun fact: Joanna was among the NC State fans who rushed the field at Carter-Finley Stadium after the Wolfpack’s upset victory over Georgia Tech during the 2025 football season.
