Appalachian students from the Department of Sustainable Technology & the Built Environment and the Walker College of Business are taking over!

This Friday, September 18, from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, everyday parking spaces on campus and in the community will be transformed into SOCIAL PLACES as part of International PARK(ing) Day.

PARK(ing) Day (http://buff.ly/1Ygn7EG) is an annual opensource global event where citizens, artists, and activists collaborate to temporarily transform parking spaces into temporary public places. The project began in 2005 with a single installation by Rebar Group in San Francisco and has since become a global movement.

In its inaugural year at Appalachian State, PARK(ing) Day presented students with two unique project challenges:

- Building Science and Social Entrepreneurship students are raising public awareness for local to global social causes in the community, ranging from traffic and housing to water quality and misleading food labeling

- IDEXlab (Integrative Design Experience Laboratory) students are creating "pop-up" outdoor classrooms on campus

So swing on by the PARKs this Friday (see map) and support a cause or witness (and participate in) an alternative classroom experience!
