Last night, we had an amazing conversation that really sparked some great discussions! Our main focus was on the important topics of toileting, accidents, and the impact of trauma. It was a heartfelt exchange, and we also found plenty of moments to build our sense of community along the way.

“My 6-year-old completely melts down every morning when it is time to put on shoes and leave for school, even if we start early. How can I ease this transition?”

When a child with a trauma background melts down over shoes and socks, it’s rarely defiance—it is a nervous system screaming “overload!” Morning transitions require a massive shift in executive functioning and sensory processing.
Save your seat for our FREE Virtual Roundtable to learn how to rebuild your morning routine. Comment ROUNDTABLE for the link!

Our kids have histories that affect how they process the world. A simple bath can feel like a sensory assault. As an OT and a Foster mom I look past the “defiance” and see the dysregulation. By letting them wear the snorkel gear, you are partnering with their nervous system instead of fighting it.
Join our next FREE sensory round table to Calm the Chaos at bathtime!

The ice cream is melting, and so are they. 🍦🚨A beautiful summer day turns into tears over a sticky drip. It’s easy to feel frustrated, but as an OT and Foster Parent Partner, I look beneath the behavior. When a child’s internal cup is full, a melting cone overflows it. Summer brings intense nervous system triggers:☀️ Blinding sun and draining heat🔊 Crowded, chaotic spaces🌀 Broken routines and sudden transitionsFor kids with sensory differences or trauma, these shifts trigger fight-or-flight. The melting ice cream isn't the cause of the meltdown—it’s just the final straw.Skip the lecture. Grab a cool wipe, offer your calm, and weather the sensory storm together.Co-regulation always comes before cooperation. ❤️

It’s not bad behavior. It’s a dysregulated nervous system. 🛑
For children with a history of trauma, the brain’s internal alarm system is already set to hyper-alert. Background noise, moving peers, or bright lights can easily trigger a physiological survival response.
When a child covers their ears and cries, they aren’t “choosing” to throw a tantrum. They are experiencing sensory overload combined with a lack of felt safety.
Trauma fundamentally changes how the brain processes sensory input. What looks like a behavioral choice is actually a survival mechanism.
Children want to do well when they feel safe. If they can’t manage the room, they need sensory accommodations and a calm adult—not behavior modification.
How do you support your child when they hit sensory overload? Let’s chat in the comments. 🎧
