USA Deaf Softball Commemorates Juneteenth — Freedom Day

USA Deaf Softball honors Juneteenth, the historic day marking the final enforcement of freedom for enslaved African Americans in the United States.

Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, taking effect on January 1, 1863, freedom was not immediately realized for all. It was not until June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and the order was read aloud at Ashton Villa, that the last enslaved people were officially informed of their freedom.

Juneteenth stands as a powerful reminder of resilience, justice, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. USA Deaf Softball proudly joins communities across the nation in commemorating this day and honoring the strength and contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

Thank you, coaches and staff

Every station, every demo, every conversation, every high five — our staff gave eleven campers their full energy from check-in to the final out.

Demonstrating. Discussing. Encouraging. Competing alongside the campers. That was our staff, all day long.

The inaugural USA Deaf Softball Youth Clinic doesn't happen without you.

To our eleven.

You showed up early on a Saturday. You tried things you'd never done before. You cheered for each other on every rep, every swing, every throw. You made the inaugural USA Deaf Softball Youth Clinic everything we hoped it would be.

Some of you were brand new to this game. Some of you have been playing for years. Every single one of you left better than you arrived — and you left US better too.

This clinic wasn't about us teaching you softball. It was about showing you that this game and this community — they all belong to you.

Thank you, campers. We are so proud of you.

Part Two: The Game.
After a morning of fundamentals, we put it all on the field. One full hour of live simulated game play — real at-bats, real defense, real coaching in the moment.
Coaches stepped into the pitcher and catcher roles. Older campers showed the younger ones how it's done. Younger campers showed the older ones what fearless looks like.

Last picture: Three pitchers. One hour and 15 minutes. All three crushed it.
Our pitching trio took the circle for our live simulated game — youngest to oldest — and every one of them held their own. Strikes thrown. Outs recorded. Confidence built.

Live game lessons stick differently.

You can drill a ground ball a hundred times in practice, but the first time you field one in a real game situation and make the throw?

That memory lives forever.

The inaugural USA Deaf Softball Youth Clinic is in the books.

Eleven Deaf and Hard of Hearing athletes spent Saturday at Gallaudet Softball Complex working through every phase of the game — and a community grew a little bigger, a little stronger, a little louder.

Here's what the morning looked like:

Catcher work — receiving, framing, blocking

Pitching development from our youngest to our oldest

Infield reps, ground balls, footwork, throws

Sweating, learning, laughing, high-fiving, and building belief that this game belongs to them.

Before the drills, we build the bonds. Team-building games to kick off our first-ever USA Deaf Softball Youth Clinic — high-fives, laughs, and a whole lot of hustle. 🇺🇸🥎

Last picture: Hydration is no joke when it was 95°! Joseph, our Youth Program Director, made sure every camper stayed cool and hydrated all day long. Taking care of our athletes on the field.
