➡️Powerful Earthquake Strikes Indonesia
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Flores on August 15, leaving widespread destruction across communities in the region. At least 71 people have died, nearly 1,200 have been injured, and more than 59,000 remain displaced. Nearly 12,000 homes have been damaged, along with hundreds of schools, health facilities, and places of worship. Many families continue to stay in tents, evacuation centers, and temporary shelters as recovery efforts continue.
Thousands of aftershocks have followed the initial earthquake, leaving many residents afraid to return home. Aid is reaching affected communities, but damaged infrastructure and mountainous terrain have made some areas difficult to access. On August 20, another magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the Flores region, adding to the uncertainty facing families already recovering from the disaster.
🙏 Lord, we pray for the people of Indonesia as they face the loss and uncertainty caused by this earthquake. Comfort those who are grieving loved ones, bring healing to the injured, and provide safe shelter for families who have been displaced. Give strength and wisdom to first responders, aid workers, and volunteers as they serve affected communities. We especially remember children and families who remain fearful because of the continuing aftershocks. Bring peace in the midst of uncertainty and provide for those who need food, clean water, shelter, and other essential support. Lord, hear our prayers.
➡️ Severe Flooding Impacts Communities in Indiana
Days of heavy rain and severe storms have caused historic flooding across parts of Indiana. At least seven people have died, hundreds have been evacuated, and numerous water rescues have taken place as floodwaters affected homes, roads, and communities. Some areas of central Indiana received more than a foot of rain between August 11 and 17, causing the White River to reach levels not seen since 1913 and set new records in several locations. As floodwaters recede, families and communities are beginning the difficult work of cleaning up and recovering from the damage.
Nazarene churches are responding to needs in communities affected by the flooding. Congregations and volunteers are mobilizing to provide practical support, including food, water, cleaning supplies, Crisis Care Kits, and assistance with cleanup efforts. As communities begin the recovery process and needs continue to emerge, Nazarenes are coming alongside their neighbors with care and support.
🙏 Lord, we pray for the families and communities in Indiana affected by these devastating floods. Comfort those who are grieving, provide for families who have been displaced or whose homes have been damaged, and give them strength as they begin the difficult work of recovery. We thank you for Nazarene churches and volunteers who are serving their neighbors during this time. Give them wisdom and strength as they respond, and provide the resources needed to continue caring for affected communities. Lord, hear our prayers.
➡️ Children Growing with Hope in Chile
Through Holistic Child Development (HCD), Nazarene child development centers create safe and caring spaces where children can grow spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. In Chile, the Abrazos de Mamá child development center is putting this approach into practice by providing educational support and caring for children and families facing a variety of challenges. Today, the center serves around 30 children, 90 percent of whom have specific educational support needs.
Recently, the team reflected on how much the ministry has grown since it began and gave thanks for the ways God continues to work through Abrazos de Mamá. What began as a response to educational needs has become a place where children and families experience encouragement, care, and hope. The team shared that behind each child's story are years of faithful service and a continued willingness to follow God's call. As new children continue to arrive, they remain grateful for the opportunity to serve and for the ways God is using the center to bring hope, love, and restoration to families.
🙏 Lord, we thank you for the children and families being served through Abrazos de Mamá and for the faithful team that continues to care for them. We praise you for the ways this ministry has grown and for the hope and encouragement children are experiencing there. Give the team wisdom, strength, and compassion as they respond to the needs of each child and family. We also pray for Nazarene child development centers around the world. May they continue to be places where children are loved, supported, and encouraged to grow in every area of their lives. Lord, hear our prayers.
