➡️ Earthquakes, Hurricanes, and Flooding Affect Communities Worldwide
On October 9, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Panama, damaging nearly 900 homes, injuring at least 27 people, and leaving families facing continued aftershocks. That same day, Hurricane Isaias made landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast, bringing destructive winds, flooding, and widespread power outages to communities in Florida and Alabama. In Nepal, where communities are still recovering from devastating floods earlier this year, another emergency unfolded on October 11 when a landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, triggering flooding that swept away homes and damaged infrastructure. Just days later, heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in Istanbul, Turkey, leaving at least three people dead, several missing, and thousands needing assistance or evacuation.
Across these affected communities, families are facing damaged homes, disrupted essential services, and uncertainty about what comes next. For some, the immediate concern is finding a safe place to stay, while others are beginning the difficult process of rebuilding their homes and livelihoods. Children, older adults, and families already facing difficult circumstances may be especially vulnerable as recovery efforts continue. Emergency personnel and local organizations are working to reach those in need, while churches have an important opportunity to walk alongside their communities, offering practical care, encouragement, and spiritual support. As families navigate the days and weeks ahead, continued compassion and support will be essential to their recovery.
🙏 Lord, we lift up the communities affected by these disasters in Panama, the United States, Nepal, and Turkey. Comfort those grieving the loss of loved ones, bring peace to families facing uncertainty, and protect those who remain vulnerable to dangerous conditions. Provide safe shelter, food, clean water, and essential resources for those who have been displaced or whose homes and livelihoods have been damaged. Give strength and wisdom to emergency personnel, local churches, and organizations as they respond to urgent needs and walk alongside families during recovery. May those facing difficult days ahead experience care, encouragement, and hope through the support of their communities. Lord, hear our prayers.
➡️ A New School Year Brings Hope to Children in Cameroon
In Yaoundé, Cameroon, the Yaoundé Nazarene Bilingual Child Development Center is helping create educational opportunities for vulnerable children, particularly those from families facing poverty or displacement. For many of these children, attending school can be difficult because of the challenges their families experience. Through its commitment to holistic education, the center seeks to provide access to quality primary education while helping children develop the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills they need to grow and thrive. Rooted in the ministry of the local Nazarene church, the project also recognizes the important role education can play in strengthening families and communities.
As the 2026–2027 school year begins, the center has shared encouraging news. Children participating in the project have been able to begin their classes with the support of the center, giving them an opportunity to continue learning and building toward their futures. In an October 15 update, parents, children, and volunteers expressed their gratitude for the care and assistance they have received. For families facing difficult circumstances, knowing their children have the opportunity to attend school brings encouragement and renewed hope. Each new school year represents another opportunity for these children to discover their abilities, develop their potential, and take meaningful steps toward a brighter future.
🙏 Lord, we thank You for the children at the Yaoundé Nazarene Bilingual Child Development Center who have been able to begin a new school year. Thank You for the care and generosity that have helped make their education possible. Continue to provide for the needs of these children and their families, especially those facing poverty or displacement. Give wisdom, patience, and strength to the teachers, volunteers, and local church as they nurture each child's growth and well-being. May this ministry continue opening doors to education and helping children grow in knowledge, confidence, and faith. Lord, hear our prayers.
