Laura is a single mother and substitute teacher in a school district just north of Philadelphia, working a schedule she can flex around the needs of her two children. Her teenage daughter is living with a progressive neurological condition that has already claimed the mobility in her hands, and her toddler son is nonverbal with autism. Her family, Laura says, is all of her prayers answered in one.

Laura first applied for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) around the time of her daughter's diagnosis, when one parent needed to step back from work to manage therapies and specialist appointments. SNAP provides support to many households with children, like Laura's. Research has shown that 79% of SNAP households include a child, elderly individual or person with a disability.

Today, Laura’s SNAP benefits cover roughly three weeks of carefully budgeted groceries. The Warminster Food Bank – a partner of Philabundance – helps her navigate the fourth week of the month. "I cannot stress enough how helpful SNAP is with taking the pressure of providing my family with meals off the table," she says. “[Without the food bank,] we would probably not be eating as well, and maybe not as frequently. We might be missing meals."

SNAP is the largest anti-hunger program in Pennsylvania, providing 9 meals for every 1 meal that our charitable food network provides. Our legislators and communities need to hear the voices and stories of SNAP recipients to understand the real-world impact of this critical program. Fresh, versatile, and packed with nutrients, asparagus is one of spring’s signature vegetables, but in PA it can often grow into the summer months. Whether served roasted, grilled, sautéed, or added to soups and pasta dishes, asparagus can bring color, flavor, and nutrition to many different types of meals.
