Lemon Grove Historical Society The Lemon Grove Historical Society is Lemon Grove’s leading cultural institution. Founded in 1978, It is a popular site for social rentals.

The Lemon Grove Historical Society (LGHS) is Lemon Grove’s leading cultural institution. Founded in 1978, the Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Membership is open to individuals, families, businesses and organizations. LGHS has an important track record in historic preservation, in promoting and displaying the work of regional artists, and in providing insight into huge world events and their impact on the home town. LGHS saved the City’s first church, the 1897 First Congregational Church of Lemon Grove (also known as the “Atherton Chapel”) and oversaw its adaptive reuse as the Parsonage Museum of Lemon Grove. This Folk Victorian charmer offers two floors of beautiful exhibits related to the history of the community. LGHS received a 2001 Governor’s Historic Preservation Award for the rehabilitation of the building. The Society further saved the 1928 H Lee House, a handsome Tudor Revival mansion, and oversaw its adaptive reuse as the City’s cultural center. Located in Treganza Heritage Park (formerly Civic Center Park), in the heart of Lemon Grove, the Parsonage Museum and the H Lee House Cultural Center are owned by the City of Lemon Grove and operated by the Lemon Grove Historical Society.

Lemon Grove has been active in supporting its schools for over 100 years. It was community spirit that formed the first school in 1893. And the Lemon Grove Forward Club, active since 1913, was at the forefront of the support effort. It was Forward Club President Eveleen K. Bryan who led a campaign to form the Grossmont High School District and became one of its first Trustees in 1920.

So today the tradition continues as the Lemon Grove Lions Club, the GFWC - Lemon Grove Forward Club and Improving Lemon Grove join with the Lemon Grove School District to support Lemon Grove's kids.

It used to be a bank. It was the center of commerce in the center of town. It was across the street from the Lemon Grove Bakery. (The bakery was the former Sonka Store).

It was Lemon Grove's first bank - First National Trust & Savings - opened in 1949. It would later become Union Bank and serve Lemon Grove for three generations.

After staying vacant for a decade, it is coming back to life as a regional family resource center operated by the County of San Diego.

The Lemon Grove Family Resource Center will soon provide the same essential services in a new, more accessible location in the heart of the community.

Please join us as we hear Helen (McCormick) Hobbs-Halmay, Past President of the Lemon Grove Historical Society, Senior Emerita of Adelante, (newsletter of the Congress of History of San Diego Imperial Counties) and Soroptimist International of Lemon Grove member as she sure shares her research on "The Lion at the End of the Street."

Helen grew up in a Lemon Grove neighborhood where there was rumored to be a pet lion. It is the basis for an amazing factual historical mystery about Lemon Grove in the early 1930s and her search for answers.

Helen's search includes the famous Ringling brother circus World War I, the founding years of the San Diego zoo and the Hearst Castle.

Come meet the author. The story is fascinating and we are not LION!
