The Third Annual Young Michigan Filmmakers Festival (YMFF) will take place on Saturday night, August 15, at the Old Art Building in Leland from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. Last year there were over 90 short films submitted by young filmmakers from all over the State of Michigan and the top 30 were shown at the awards ceremony last July.
The entry criteria are; filmmakers must be 25 years of age or younger, currently live in Michigan, and the films cannot exceed 30 minutes in length. Films can be submitted via YouTube or Vimeo. There are no entry fees or admission fees this year.
Awards are presented in the categories of Best Comedy, Best Drama, Best Documentary, Best Animated Film, Best Music Video, Best Experimental/Avant Garde film, Best Film, and the Audience’s Choice Award. A panel of jurors will screen the films submitted. The jury, made up of industry professionals and film aficionados, will trim down the presentation to approximately 3 1/2 hours for August 15 screening and awards ceremony. To be considered for an award, your film and online entry form must be received by June 3, 2015. Visit YMFF.org for details.
The Old Art Building’s W.T Best Theater features HD digital projection and surround-sound capabilities to bring a state-of-the-art big screen experience for the young filmmakers. Schools represented last year were the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Alma College, The College for Creative Studies, Northern Michigan University, Grand Valley State, Mott Community College and Leland High School. In 2015, there were also several post-graduate individual entries and it is anticipated there will be even more this year.
Admission is free, but contributions are greatly appreciated. Seating in the Old Art Building is limited to 200. There will be a meet and greet at 5:30 pm with live music and an intermission. The awards reception will immediately follow the film screenings.
The film festival is sponsored, in part, by the Leelanau Community Cultural Center, The Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs, The National Endowment for the Arts, McConnell & Associates and Brick House Interactive.
