During this spring's vernal pool monitoring, our team found plenty of fairy shrimp, caddisfly larvae, and other ephemeral creatures floating about. 🧚🏻♀️🦐✨
Fairy shrimp are an especially fun find, because:
1) They're literally tiny crustaceans... freshwater crustaceans found in the middle of a forest.
2) They're related to sea-monkeys... and lobsters... and crabs. (We know, it's wild.)
3) They're a vernal pool indicator species, meaning their presence confirms the ecological health and ephemeral nature of a wetland area.
These precious ecosystems are scattered across our Northwoods, and you can help protect them! For more information on participating in future monitoring efforts, follow Michigan Vernal Pools Partnership.
(Special thanks to Glen Lake Community Schools' 7th graders for joining us out at Krumwiede Forest Reserve this year!)
