As part of the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation Ag in the Classroom Initiative, Washington County Farm Bureau® recently offered local students the opportunity to participate in the 2nd Grade Coloring Contest and the Ag Art Drawing Contest. The goal of these contests is to let students express their creativity while acquiring broader knowledge about agriculture and how it affects their world.

The 2nd Grade Coloring Contest winner is Olivia Howle from Washington School. Runners-Up are Charlotte Smythe and Mary Waldon King, also from Washington School.

The Ag Art Drawing Contest Division I (grades 4-6) winners are: Haley Boggs from Washington School and Layla Simpson from Deer Creek School. Division II (grades 7-12) winners are: Kennedi Dorsey, Fletcher McGaugh, and Victor Baker, all from St. Joe. Victor was the overall county winner.

The winning pictures for both contests were entered into an 11 county Divisional contest.

If you would like your classroom to get involved in the Ag in the Classroom Initiative, please contact Washington County Farm Bureau Federation Secretary, Teri Ramsey, at 662-686-7955.

MFBF is very concerned about the potential government shutdown. Our state’s farmers and ranchers are dealing with depressed markets and record input prices. This shutdown jeopardizes the safety net programs and disaster assistance to be provided to our farmers in a time of critical need. We encourage the Congress and Administration to work toward a solution that supports our industry.

“Mississippi landowners do an excellent job of sustainably managing and replanting timber and have added three million forested acres since 1938. However, we fully believe landowners should have the right to use their land as they desire.”

MFBF and the MS Forestry Association filed the attached letter today to the Mississippi Congressional Delegation on behalf of the state's timber producers. We’re committed to standing up for the industries that sustain our state—and for the people whose lives and legacies are rooted in them.
