Fortunate Ferals

Fortunate Ferals We do this thru assistance, education, information and guidance and are always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. Fortunate Ferals Inc. Thank You!

We are dedicated volunteers whose goal is to provide TNVR assistance, information and guidance to responsible caretakers of feral/free roaming cat colonies, in memory of Glenda Sparnroft. Our main focus is on all aspects of TNR and helping the community with carrying out individual and all Trap, Neuter and RETURN projects for any given feral/free roaming cat colony. Because we have limited volunte

ers and space, we are NOT an animal shelter and cannot foster or find homes for friendly, abandoned or stray animals. We DO try to assist caretakers with finding permanent homes for potentially adoptable animals and also with the ongoing care and support of their existing colonies. Fortunate Ferals was formed to fulfill a need in the community and we stay in existence because the community recognizes that need. We encourage and welcome anyone who would like to volunteer their time to help with ongoing TNR projects and/or upcoming fundraisers. We accept and greatly appreciate any donations of unopened cat food, gently used sheets, pet dishes, carriers, etc. Please contact us and we will gladly schedule a pick up time/location for these donated items. is a non profit 501(c)3 organization and can only survive on the generosity of public donations all of which are 100% tax deductible. Please give from your heart to help support the ongoing efforts of controlling the feral/free roaming cat population in our community.

First things firstโ€ฆ there are currently ๐—ป๐—ผ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐˜€ scheduled.

And to be honest, I donโ€™t really plan on doing another one anytime soon.

I just need to focus my energy on some other things that need my attention right now.

We did find a location for a potential Lehigh mobile TNVR unit.

Now, after working through some logistics within that area, we unfortunately had to switch around the dates a little bit.

Not ideal and not exactly what we wanted to have to do, but thatโ€™s okay.

Iโ€™m currently waiting to hear back from the location to see if the new date works for them.

I do want to say this took a really long time to put together.

Although everything looks promising so far, I have not physically seen the space yet, so until I do, Iโ€™m not comfortable publicly sharing information about it.

I know some of you feel like Lehigh Acres has been ignored, and trust me, I absolutely understand why people feel desperate for help there right now.

But none of this happens overnight.

When it comes to building resources like this, you have to be strategic.
You have to do things correctly and sustainably.

If I abandoned what we already started somewhere else before finishing it properly, what would that accomplish for the communities we already committed to?

A lot of people want us to take kittens, foster kittens, or find homes for kittens, and that is simply not what we are structured to do.

Thatโ€™s what the many cat rescues in our area are for. And yes, I know theyโ€™re full and overwhelmed. They are exhausted too.

But people who are willing to foster the kittens themselves and actively work through rescue waitlists are often much more likely to receive help sooner rather than later.

One month ago, Fortunate Ferals received a $5,000 donation from an individual who wished to remain anonymous.

There truly are not enough words to express how incredibly grateful we are for their generosity and trust in our organization.

Because of this donation, we have already been able to directly help 29 cats throughout Lee County through TNR services, emergency veterinary care, medical treatment, neonatal kitten support, and rescue assistance.

So far, this donation has funded:

โ€ข TNR services for 21 community cats through Cape Coral Animal Shelter TNVR Days, Southwest Florida Spay Neuter Services, and individual TNR vouchers
โ€ข A dental extraction for Mr. Kitty
โ€ข Extensive wound care treatment, medications, and follow-up care for Shadow
โ€ข Emergency veterinary treatment for a bottle baby kitten experiencing respiratory distress
โ€ข Thyroid evaluations, bloodwork, and follow-up veterinary care for Zeus, Toby, and W***y
โ€ข Humane euthanasia for Good Boy and Willow so they could pass peacefully and without suffering

This donation also helped provide:
โ€ข Neonatal kitten formula and electrolyte supplies
โ€ข Kitten rescue setup supplies
โ€ข Mobile unit operational and sanitation supplies
โ€ข Trapping assistance and transportation support throughout the community
โ€ข Rescue resources for caretakers trying their best to help cats in need

So far, $4,511.04 of this donation has already gone directly back into helping cats and supporting rescue efforts here in Lee County, with the remaining funds now going toward the cost of todayโ€™s mobile unit where we were once again able to provide TNR services for double digit cats.

Weโ€™ll share more about that in a separate post soon.

Every single dollar has translated into real veterinary care, real support, and real second chances for cats who otherwise may not have received help.

To the person who made this possible: thank you.

Your compassion and generosity are actively changing lives, and we are deeply grateful for the support you placed in us. โค๏ธ

We may not be as responsive this week because weโ€™re gearing up and preparing to tackle another mobile unit in Suncoast, but before things get hectic, I wanted to share an incredibly heartwarming update with you all. โค๏ธ

Yesterday, I brought Shadow back to Lori.

While he still has a tiny bit of healing left to doโ€ฆand his recheck is already scheduled, it was time for him to start bonding with his new family.

Sure enough, heโ€™s fitting right in.
Lori has the perfect setup for him.

Sheโ€™s keeping him separate for now since she has other male cats in the house who need a little time to adjust to the idea of having a new brother, but so far, so good.

Theyโ€™re even playing under the door, and Shadow is such an incredibly docile, gentle guy. He also happens to be a huge water fan, so I have a feeling he and his brother (who apparently loves water too) are going to be extremely entertaining together.

Helping get Shadow healthy, safe, and ready for this next chapter has been such a pleasure. Thereโ€™s no doubt in my mind that he was never truly feral, someone simply failed him, like so many owned animals sadly are.

But thankfully, Lori stepped up in a huge way.

Not only did she have him neutered, but she also made sure he received the medical help he needed and then went the extra mile by welcoming him inside instead of leaving him to fend for himself outdoors.

Thereโ€™s nothing more heartwarming than a story like this, and Iโ€™m so grateful for everyone involved.

Shadow is in truly wonderful hands.

He will be missed very muchโค๏ธ

The more I do, the more I learn.
The more I learn, the more I understand.
And the more I understandโ€ฆ the more I feel responsible for helping other people understand too.

I donโ€™t say that from a place of ego. I say it from a place of responsibility.

Itโ€™s been almost a year since I stepped into the role of president of Fortunate Feralsโ€ฆan organization that has been part of this community long before me.

While I spent years learning in the background before taking this position, this past year has given me a completely different perspective on community cat welfare, rescue work, TNR, and the systems surrounding all of it here in Lee County.

Taking over something with a legacy this important is not something I take lightly, especially knowing how much of the heart and soul of Fortunate Ferals was built by Glenda.

Whether you know her personally, agree with her, or have simply heard her name in passing, her impact on this community is undeniable..and through all of us continuing this work, people will continue to know her regardless.

And one thing has become very clear to me:
We still have a lot of work to do.

Not just physically.
Not just financially.
But mentally, emotionally, structurally, and as a community overall.

This post is not directed at any one person, rescue, situation, or event.

Nothing โ€œhappenedโ€ today that caused me to write this.

In fact, thatโ€™s exactly the point.

These are patterns I have observed consistently over time.

The reality is that rescue and TNR work is filled with overwhelmed people trying to solve overwhelming problems.
People are exhausted.
Burnt out.
Underfunded.
Under appreciated.
Emotionally drained.

And when that happens, communication breaks down, emotions take over, division happens, and people lose sight of the fact that we are supposed to be working toward the same goal.

The more I learn about why we are where we are as a county, the more I feel the need to educate peopleโ€ฆnot based on day-to-day drama or individual situations, but based on the bigger picture of what sustainable, effective, and responsible community cat welfare actually requires.

Because this work cannot survive long-term without education, accountability, cooperation, consistency, and the willingness to evolve.

Kitten season especially has a way of bringing every weakness in the system to the surface. It is exhausting in every possible way.

And whether people say it out loud or not, I know almost everyone out here doing this work is feeling the same heaviness right now.

This is not work for the weak.
It is not work for the uncompassionate.
And honestly, it is not work for the unwilling to learn.

Times are changing, and modernizing the way we approach rescue, TNR, education, and communication is essential if we actually want long-term progress.

So I want this post to simply be a reminder.

A reminder that even when you feel like you are drowning in this work, there are other people around you trying to stay afloat tooโ€ฆbuilding sandcastles beside you with whatever energy they have left.

A reminder to thank the people who have helped you with your cat cases, even in small ways.

A reminder to be soft with people, even when they are hard on you.

And a reminder to independent trappers, rescues, shelters, fosters, and advocates alike: the community is not as knowledgeable as you are.

Most people truly do not understand the reality behind this work because they have never lived it firsthand.

Sometimes education requires patience. Sometimes it requires simplifying the message.

Sometimes it requires speaking in a way that feels almost elementary just so people can fully understand the โ€œwhyโ€ behind what we do.

I hope this helps somebody see things a little differently. And more than anything, I hope it helps more people help more cats in the future.

Honestly?
๐™‰๐™š๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ง ๐™™๐™ค ๐™ฌ๐™š.

Nobody doing TNR has extra time laying around.

๐Ÿ˜ชThe people trapping after work?
Tired.

๐Ÿ˜ชThe people setting alarms every 45 minutes to check traps?
Tired.

๐Ÿ˜ชThe people driving before sunrise to clinics?
Tired.

๐Ÿ˜ชThe people answering messages while cooking dinner, raising kids, working jobs, and barely holding their own life together?
Tired.

People just decide something matters enough to make room for it anyway.

Thatโ€™s the part we wish more people understood.

Somebody rearranged their schedule.
โ—๏ธLost sleep.
โ—๏ธSpent money.
โ—๏ธSweated their ass off in the heat.
โ—๏ธLearned how to trap.
โ—๏ธDrove across counties.
โ—๏ธWas frustrated.
โ—๏ธOverwhelmed.
โ—๏ธBurnt out.

Because once you truly SEE the problem, it becomes really hard to ignore it.

This work is not built on people with unlimited time, money, or energy.

Itโ€™s built on ordinary people deciding:
โ€œSomeone needs to do somethingโ€ฆ so I guess itโ€™s gonna be me.โ€

And honestly?
That mindset is the only reason any of this works at all.

The people making a difference in this community are not super human.

Theyโ€™re exhausted, ordinary people who decided these โ€œunownedโ€ cats still mattered anyway.

Of course after todayโ€™s workshop, I had to go visit the adoptable kittiesโ€ฆ and while every single one of them is the most perfect little four-legged furry friend, there were ๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ ๐ข๐ง ๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐š๐ซ that completely stole my heart today.

First there was ๐‹๐š๐œ๐ž๐ฒ ๐‹๐จ๐จ.

From the moment I walked in, I knew just how special she was.

She is the ๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐ค๐ข๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ little girl I think Iโ€™ve ever met.

Sheโ€™s got a thing for shoes, sheโ€™s all mouth, all attitude, and absolutely full of personality.

But underneath all of that sass is one incredibly silly, lovable little kitten.

Although her vision probably isnโ€™t the best, she could definitely still see enough to chase toys around like an absolute maniac, and I loved every second I got to spend with her.

Honestlyโ€ฆ it was hard to leave her behind.

..but there has to be somebody out there with a special place in their heart for sweet little Lacey Loo.

And then thereโ€™s ๐ƒ๐ข๐ง๐จ. ๐Ÿฅน

I didnโ€™t take my own photos with him, but oh my goodnessโ€ฆ this big hefty lump of love completely pulled at my heartstrings too.

After everything this boy has been through, he deserves the softest landing imaginable.

Heโ€™s sweet, resilient, affectionate, and just wants to be loved.

They have so many wonderful babies waiting for homes.

Somebody out there is going to be very lucky to call these two family. โค๏ธ
