Willpower can feel like it’s working right up until the water keeps coming in.

We can row harder. We can bail faster. We can tell ourselves that if we’re just strong enough, disciplined enough, or determined enough, we can keep the boat afloat.

But white-knuckle sobriety puts us at the center. And eventually, willpower runs out.

In this episode of Pathway to Recovery, Marcus shares a powerful picture of two boats: the SS Willpower, already taking on water, and a ship captained by a Higher Power: steady, strong, and secure.

The question isn’t, “Can I row hard enough?”
It’s, “Which boat am I choosing to trust?”

When we place our lives, our hearts, and our recovery in the hands of the God of your understanding, we don’t have to rely on our own strength to keep ourselves afloat.

Hear the full conversation in the newest episode of Pathway to Recovery.

Children absorb betrayal, even when no one tells them the story.

Meet our speaker: Morgan Ellsworth, LAMFT, BCC, CCPS-A, CPC.

When betrayal enters a family, the impact doesn't stop with the couple. Children feel the shift in the home, and silence and confusion can shape how they see themselves, others, and even God. That's why healing has to include the whole family.

In her session, "Family Systems in the Wake of Betrayal: The Impact on Children and Pathways to Healing," Morgan will walk parents through how parental betrayal ripples through a family and affects children emotionally, cognitively, behaviorally, spiritually, and relationally. Drawing on Kaethe Weingarten's witnessing framework, she'll offer a path from silence toward honest, age-appropriate disclosure and sustained repair, without overwhelming a child's capacity to cope. Attendees will leave with an age-appropriate disclosure language guide they can use right away.

Morgan is a Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist in Arizona and the owner of Ellsworth Family Therapy and Morgan Ellsworth Coaching & Wellness. She specializes in betrayal trauma and helps families heal together, including the children, siblings, and extended family members who are so often overlooked. She is a Certified Clinical Partner Specialist-Associate and Certified Partner Coach through APSATS, facilitates the Witnessed group for teens and adult children, and hosts the Healing Betrayed Families podcast. As a betrayed child herself, Morgan brings both clinical training and lived experience to this work.

Stopping the behavior isn't the same as recovery.

Meet our speaker: Eric Anderson, LMFT, CSAT-S.

Addiction rarely starts all at once. It grows over time as our beliefs, emotions, behaviors, and coping strategies become woven into a cycle that keeps feeding itself. That's why stopping the behavior alone so often isn't enough.

In his session, "Understanding the System of Addiction and How to Reverse It," Eric will walk us through Patrick Carnes' model of the Addictive System. We'll learn how the cycle takes root, why it gets harder to interrupt, and, most importantly, how the same system can be disrupted and reversed. He'll share a practical, step-by-step framework for moving beyond white-knuckling and toward new patterns of thinking, connection, and action that support lasting freedom.

Eric is the founder and Clinical Director of Pathway Therapy Center in Walnut Creek, California, where he helps individuals and couples heal from sexual addiction and betrayal trauma. He is a Certified S*x Addiction Therapist, co-author of Rebuilding Your Foundation, and author of the forthcoming Disciplines of Recovery.

Recovery has a way of revealing how much of yourself has been set aside. These journal prompts are a simple, private way to get reacquainted with what you love, what you’ve lost, and what you want your life to look like next. There’s no right order and no finish line: pick one prompt, and write.

If a prompt stirs up more than you expected, that’s not a failure — it’s information. Go gently, and consider bringing what surfaces to a trusted friend, a qualified therapist, or your support group.

The common denominator of snooping is pain.

In this clip from Dr. Jill Manning’s presentation on snooping in the wake of betrayal, she names something so many in our community feel but rarely say out loud: the urge to search, to check, to dig for answers isn’t about being “crazy” or “controlling.” It’s a response to real pain, suspicion, and fear that someone isn’t being honest with us.

In the full presentation, Dr. Manning goes deeper, exploring how snooping connects to attachment style, why it can keep us stuck in trauma rather than help us heal, and what healthier, more direct alternatives can look like instead.

If you’ve been there, know that your pain is valid and there is a way through it.

You've tried to stop before. Maybe hundreds of times. And it hasn't stuck.

That doesn't make you a hypocrite. What you do is different from who you are.

S*xual addiction isn't just a bad habit or a lack of willpower. It's a pattern with deep roots, and naming it honestly is the first step toward healing. You don't have to carry it alone, there's a group of men who already know exactly what you're carrying.

SAL 12-Step meetings are free, confidential, and gender-specific, in person and online.
