🐐 Passport to Adventure Day Camp Spotlight: Livestock Adventures 🍀
One of the most popular stops of the day gave campers the chance to get up close and personal with livestock!
Students learned the external body parts of goats, explored where different cuts of meat come from, and gained a better understanding of how animals contribute to our food system. They also had the opportunity to touch, handle, and even lead goats while learning proper livestock care and husbandry practices.
Of course, one of the biggest attractions was the fainting goats! Campers learned why these unique animals "faint" and discovered that, despite appearances, they aren't actually passing out. It's a genetic condition that causes their muscles to temporarily stiffen when startled.
Beyond the fun, students were introduced to the many livestock projects available through 4-H, including opportunities to raise, care for, and exhibit animals while developing responsibility, record-keeping, leadership, and animal science skills.
For many campers, this was their first hands-on experience with livestock—and maybe the beginning of a future 4-H project!
