🎃🍀 Leadership, Laughter & a Little Friendly Competition! 👻💚

Following our leadership lesson at last night's Vernon Parish 4-H Teen Leader Halloween Social, it was time to put a little FUN into leadership!

Because let's face it, being a great leader isn't always about being serious! It's also about building friendships, stepping outside your comfort zone, and knowing how to have fun together!

🎭 Our Teen Leaders showed off their creativity and personalities during a Halloween Costume Contest, bringing plenty of laughs and some fantastic costumes!

🏆 Then things got competitive with a hilarious game of Head, Shoulders, Knees & CUP! Students had to listen carefully and touch the body part called out, but when they heard "CUP!" it was a race to sn**ch the cup before their opponent! Round by round, competitors were eliminated until only one champion remained!

What looked like a little Halloween fun was also an exercise in active listening, quick thinking, focus, and friendly competition — all skills that help build strong leaders!

💚 At the end of the day, 4-H is about more than developing leaders. It's about creating friendships, building confidence, and making memories along the way!

🍀 Leadership Is About People, Service, and the Choices We Make! 💚

Last night, our Vernon Parish 4-H Teen Leaders had the privilege of welcoming Mr. Gregory Funderburk, Deputy Director of Emergency Services at JRTC and Fort Polk , as our guest speaker during our Halloween Costume Social!

Mr. Funderburk shared lessons from his career in emergency services, reminding our teens that leadership is ultimately about taking care of people and looking out for others.

He challenged students to consider how the decisions they make today shape their futures, emphasizing communication, character, honesty, integrity, and doing what's right even when no one is watching.

💧 One memorable lesson was that everyone carries two buckets: one filled with gasoline and one with water. When things go wrong, a true leader throws water on the situation rather than fueling the fire.

He closed with a powerful story about the workers building St. Paul's Cathedral. While some saw themselves simply cutting stone or earning a paycheck, another recognized he was helping build something magnificent.

His challenge to our 4-H'ers? Stand tall, square your shoulders, and recognize that you're helping build something greater than yourself — a better community, state, nation, and world! 🌎

👏 Thank you, Mr. Funderburk, for investing in our Teen Leaders and reminding them that leadership doesn't begin someday. It begins with the choices they make TODAY!

Last night, our Vernon Parish 4-H Teen Leaders enjoyed their Halloween Costume Social!

But apparently, Mr. Justin's costume had a few students scratching their heads! 😂

One student even asked, "What are you, some kind of prisoner?" 🤣

🌾🐄 From Sugar Cane to Bovine Genetics! 🧬

Today, Nathan McDonald of Faith Training Christian Academy and Mr. Justin represented Vernon Parish 4-H on the first field trip of the Central Region Junior Agricultural Leadership Program in Pointe Coupee Parish!

🌱 First Stop: Alma Plantation Sugar Cane Mill

We got a firsthand look at the incredible journey of sugar cane, from the fields to transportation, extraction, separation, processing, and ultimately the export of unrefined sugar! It was an eye-opening experience seeing the agricultural industry in action from start to finish.

🍽️ A special thank-you to Mark Carriere, Pointe Coupee Parish Extension Office-LSU AgCenter ANR Agent, for treating everyone to lunch and putting this together!

🐂 Second Stop: Continental Genetics

Here, students explored the fascinating world of animal reproductive technology and genetics, learning how semen is collected, evaluated, processed, packaged, and stored for artificial insemination. Continental Genetics works with genetic material from a variety of species, specializing in bovine genetics, with products exported around the world! 🌎

💚🍀 What an incredible opportunity for our future agricultural leaders to see the science, technology, and business behind Louisiana agriculture!

🍀💚 Vernon Middle School 4-H: From Louisiana 4-H to West Virginia 4-H ! 💚🍀

Our Vernon Middle School 4-H members put their creativity, teamwork, and communication skills to the test during yesterday’s club meeting!

🧠 The 4-H Alphabet Challenge! Students worked in teams to come up with a 4-H-related word for every letter of the alphabet. Sounds easy, right? Try finding a 4-H word that starts with X! 😅

✉️ 4-H Letters Across America! Our members are also participating in a nationwide 4-H pen pal initiative! Working together, students brainstormed and began writing letters to their new 4-H friends at the Culloden Clovers 4H Club in West Virginia! What a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow 4-H members across state lines, share experiences, and discover what makes each community unique!

👏 A big thank-you to our Vernon Middle School club officers for helping lead yesterday’s meeting and to our members for their enthusiasm and participation!

👩‍🍳🍀 Cooking Up Success with Vernon Parish 4-H! 🍀👨‍🍳

Today, Mr. Justin and Mrs. Tammy Lenahan Cecil had the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences during the Louisiana 4-H Food Challenge Agent Training at Camp Grant Walker!

We were especially proud to highlight our 2025 Division 3 Food Challenge Team as part of today's presentation, showcasing the hard work, teamwork, and skills our Vernon Parish 4-H'ers bring to the kitchen!

💚 We are incredibly grateful for Mrs. Tammy's dedication to our 4-H youth! Her passion for teaching goes far beyond recipes and cooking techniques. She's helping our students build confidence, develop life skills, and discover a genuine love for the culinary arts. We are blessed to have her pouring her time, talents, and knowledge into our kids!

🍳 Speaking of cooking... our Culinary Crew is gearing up for another exciting year!

Our Culinary Crew will meet every Monday through Christmas to kick off the season!

We're excited to see what our young chefs accomplish this year as they prepare for Commodity Cookery, the Louisiana 4-H Food Challenge, and the Next Healthy Food Star Competition for our high school students at 4-H University!

From learning kitchen fundamentals to competing on the state stage, we're helping our 4-H'ers develop skills that will last a lifetime! 💚🍀

🍉🏴‍☠️ From the Watermelon Patch to the Produce Stand! | Hicks High School 4-H

Yesterday, our Hicks Pirates welcomed a familiar face from their community, Mr. Kynell Davis, for a firsthand look at what it takes to grow a successful watermelon crop! 🌱🚜

A Hicks High School Class of 1972 graduate, Mr. Kynell shared his experiences in agriculture, from raising sheep, cattle, and goats to producing hay and the watermelons he's become so well known for around Hicks. He also spent 44 years working in the overseas oilfield industry!

Students learned that growing watermelons involves much more than planting seeds and harvesting fruit. From preparing the ground to managing expenses, labor, and sales, there's a lot that goes into getting those melons to market. 🍉💰

One eye-opening takeaway? Mr. Kynell has to sell approximately 1,800 watermelons just to break even!

What makes this lesson even more meaningful is that many of our Hicks High School 4-H members have worked for Mr. Kynell, helping harvest and sell his produce. They're not just learning about agriculture in the classroom; they're experiencing it firsthand!

👏 Thank you, Mr. Kynell Davis, for investing in our local youth, providing opportunities to develop a strong work ethic, and showing our students the business behind agriculture!

🪓🏆 A Special Woodsman Skills Recognition! 🍀

We had the opportunity to recognize Coen Davis today during the Hicks High School 4-H Club meeting!

Coen earned 1st Place in his division in Match Split during this year's West Louisiana Forestry Festival Woodsman Skills competition! 🥇

Believe it or not, Coen was so quick to take off after the competition that he disappeared before we could present him with his ribbon! 😂

We're glad we finally caught up with him today to give him the recognition he earned!

Congratulations, Coen! We're proud of you and your accomplishments! 💚🍀
