🐝 Hornbeck High School Official 4-H WAS BUZZING, TOO! 🍀

Our Hornbeck High School 4-H members kicked things off yesterday with a teamwork challenge that required a little speed, a little strategy, and a whole lot of finesse! 😂

Students were divided into teams of six and given 21 cups. The challenge? Starting at the baseline, one member at a time had to move a cup down the court to the half-court line and work with their team to build a complete pyramid. First team to finish wins! 🏃‍♂️🥤🏃‍♀️

Sounds easy enough…until it isn't.

💥 Put your cup down too hard? There goes the pyramid.
💨 Come flying in too fast? There goes the pyramid.
😬 Get impatient because the other team is catching up? You guessed it… there goes the pyramid!

It became a great exercise in communication, patience, teamwork, and figuring out that sometimes faster isn't always faster. Add in a little physical fitness running back and forth across the gym, and our Hornets definitely got moving!

And don't worry, Coach—we caught the boots before anyone went running across your gym floor in them! 😂👢

🐝 THE HORNET’S NEST WAS BUZZING WITH 4-H! 🍀

Things were buzzing at Hornbeck yesterday as students kicked off their first 4-H club meetings of the year!

Hornbeck Elementary and Junior High started by learning what a well-run 4-H meeting should look like, using the meeting script their clubs follow throughout the year. From calling the meeting to order to conducting club business, students got a look at how their meetings will operate.

Then it was time to put teamwork into action! 💪

Students were randomly divided into groups for an “Untangle the Web” challenge. Each group formed a circle, crisscrossed their arms, grabbed hands, and then had to communicate and work together to untangle themselves—without letting go! 🕸️🐝

Our JH Hornets made quick work of the challenge, so we gave them another one: figure out how to get the entire group standing without using their hands to touch the ground. Even Mrs. Prince jumped in to take on the challenge with them! 😂

Afterward, students talked about what they experienced: What made teamwork difficult? What made it easier? What happens when everyone communicates, listens, and works toward the same goal?

That’s a pretty good lesson for more than just a game. Whether you're untangling a web, running a club meeting, completing a service project, or taking on a challenge together, every Hornet has a role in the hive. 🐝🍀

August is officially in the books, and we finished the month with 662 enrolled Vernon Parish 4-H members! 🎉

Enrollment opened back up around 1:00 a.m., so anyone enrolling after midnight was excluded from the August contest. We downloaded the final enrollment data into Excel and had Excel randomly select five names AND randomly assign them 1st–5th place—keeping the drawing completely random.

🎬🍿 Teen Leader Movie Night is underway!

Tonight our Vernon Parish 4-H Teen Leaders chose Wonka for the big screen, but there’s a little more happening tonight than popcorn and a movie!

Before we hit play, we challenged our members to watch for something 4-H talks about often: finding your SPARK. ✨

Throughout the movie, they’re watching what happens when Wonka discovers something he’s passionate about and refuses to give up—even when people tell him his dream is impossible. They’re also looking for creativity, perseverance, friendship, teamwork and leadership, and how people with very different talents can accomplish more when they work together.

And we left them with one question to think about:

Is success just about accomplishing your dream, or does who you become—and who you help along the way—matter just as much?

That’s youth development. Helping young people discover what excites them, surrounding them with people who encourage them, and giving them opportunities to grow into leaders who are Beyond Ready for whatever comes next. 🍀

For now, though… the lights are down, the popcorn is flowing, and Wonka is on the big screen! 🎥🍫

🍂🌲 2026 West Louisiana Forestry Festival & FAIR CATALOGS ARE HERE! 🌲🍂

It’s almost fair time! The 119th Annual West Louisiana Forestry Festival & Fair is coming up October 7–11, 2026, and printed copies of this year’s Fair Catalog are now available!

📖 Where can you pick one up?
Printed catalogs are available:
• At the Old Courthouse on the glass display case
• In the Vernon Parish 4-H Office
• At the Vernon Parish Police Jury Office

We’ve included pictures below so you know exactly what you’re looking for!

⚠️ PLEASE READ THIS YEAR'S CATALOG CAREFULLY! Several important dates, times, and procedures have changed from last year. Don't rely on what you remember from previous fairs.

🐔 POULTRY EXHIBITORS: ALL poultry must be brought in for inspection Saturday, September 26 from 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. OR Sunday, September 27 from 1:00–3:00 p.m. Poultry will then be brought to the Livestock Barn for fair entry on Wednesday, October 7 from 5:00–8:00 p.m.

🐶 PET SHOW: You MUST pre-register your pet during Ag Exhibit Entry on Saturday, October 3 or Sunday, October 4. Don't wait until the morning of the Pet Show to enter!

🐴 HORSE SHOW: Remember, students DO NOT have to be 4-H members to participate in the Horse Show. Eligible youth simply need to meet the Vernon Parish youth/student eligibility requirements outlined in the catalog. Horses must also have a current negative Coggins test.

📅 AG EXHIBIT ENTRY: Saturday, October 3 from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 4 from 1:00–5:00 p.m. There will be NO late entries after 5:00 p.m. Sunday.

There are LOTS of opportunities for youth and adults throughout the catalog—from livestock, poultry and rabbits to photography, baking, field crops, crafts, forestry and more.

We’re down to the FINAL weekend of August, and Monday is the LAST DAY to get your 4-H enrollment completed and be entered into our August Enrollment Contest! 🎉

We’ve loved seeing so many of you already at Open Houses, 4-H interest meetings, and club days across Vernon Parish. The excitement for this year is growing, and we’ve officially crossed 500 enrolled 4-H members! 🙌

That’s a great start — but we finished last year with almost 1,300 members, so we know there are still plenty of you who need to get those enrollments completed!

And remember — enrollment isn't just about getting your name in the prize drawing! Your membership needs to be completed so you're registered and covered to participate in upcoming 4-H activities.
