We hope you had a fun and festive Mardi Gras season!

Now’s a great time to get back into routine with:

💧 Hydration: Choose water often and limit sugary drinks; hydration needs vary, but water and water‑rich foods are your best tools.

🥗 Balanced meals: Focus on whole, real foods - fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats - and reduce highly processed options.

🏃‍♀️ Movement: Adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate‑intensity activity per week, such as brisk walking - about 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

😴 Sleep: Adults need 7 or more hours of sleep each night for optimal health and recovery.

Celebrate, reset, and keep moving forward!

🍽️ Cooking at home
🌿 Seasoning with herbs instead of salt - Try out this month's spice, turmeric!

✴️What is turmeric?
Turmeric is a common spice and a major ingredient in curry powder. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. Curcumin is known worldwide for its multiple health benefits, which act primarily as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

✴️How can you use turmeric?
Use turmeric in dressings, sauces, soups, and even breakfast items like eggs, oatmeal, and milk. Turmeric tastes best when coupled with strong, warming spices, like pumpkin pie spice, which is made with ginger, cinnamin, cloves, and allspice. Also, it complements grains such as rice, quinoa, bulgar, and couscous.

✴️Try out this recipe: Golden Turmeric Milk

Ingredients:
1 cup 1% milk
1 teaspoon honey
1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric or 2 tsp. fresh
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of black pepper (optional)

Directions:
1. Set a small saucepan over low heat. Add the milk, honey, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and if desired, black pepper. Stir with a whisk until well combined.
2. Bring to steaming, just below a simmer. Do not let it come to a boil. Keep just below a simmer, stirring occasionally, 5-7 minutes. Do not let milk scald.
3. Remove from heat. Stir in the vanilla. Taste and add additional honey for sweetness. Add frothed milk if desired.

Laissez les bons temps rouler! 🎭✨

Today was a delicious success at our Mardi Gras Teen Chef Camp! Hosted by our LSU AgCenter Nutrition and Community Health agent at the Rosepine Research Station, we were thrilled to welcome talented teens from both Beauregard and Vernon Parish.

Our young chefs spent the morning mastering three classic Louisiana-inspired dishes:
🥘 Hearty Gumbo
🥧 Savory Quiche Lorraine
👑 Festive Mini King Cakes

Everything turned out absolutely delicious! It was wonderful to see these teens building essential kitchen skills while celebrating our rich culinary heritage.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and made today so special. We can't wait to see what these chefs cook up next! 🍳💜💚💛

Last night, Justine, the Nutrition and Community Health Extension Agent, had the pleasure of teaching a fun and delicious class with the Women’s Ministry at Leesville First Baptist Church! The group learned how to build healthier charcuterie boards using MyPlate as a guide, and the ladies created some truly beautiful, delicious, and nourishing MyPlate‑inspired charcuterie boards to enjoy.

A few quick tips for building a MyPlate Charcuterie:
• Add plenty of whole fruits and veggies for color and crunch.
• Include lean proteins like chicken, turkey, seafood or hummus.
• Choose whole‑grain crackers or breads as your “vessels.”
• Add dairy with low‑fat cheese, yogurt, or cottage cheese.
• Watch out for common charcuterie items that tend to be high in fat and sodium.

Such a wonderful group and a great evening together! 🧀🥕🍇💛
