A big thank you to the crew from GYMGUYZ Northern Virginia who spent the morning with us planting lilies, clearing beds, and seeding cover crops to help us prepare for spring 2027. (And they only made us do a couple burpees between rows.)

We loved having KD, Guy, Melvin, and Dan out in the garden. Thank you so much for your tremendous help today.

Autumn is a beautiful season of change, both in the garden and in our lives. But change isn't always easy.

At Legacy Farms, we recognize that growth looks different for everyone. We combine relationship-building mentorship with opportunities to stretch beyond what's familiar. In so doing, apprentices develop greater self-awareness and discover new capabilities.

In his blog The Gardener's Apprentice, James reflects on returning to the farm to find that nearly everything had changed.

“At the farm we are promoting a greater understanding of our emotions and our challenges as a neurodiverse team. My supervisors noticed I wasn’t myself.”

See that empty row behind them? This morning it was a full bed of celosia. Then the Young Men’s Service League Dulles Chapter showed up.

Celosia does not come out of the ground politely. It has thick stems and opinions. Our YMSL volunteers—Sarah, Owen, Allison, and Colin—pulled the entire bed anyway, and they did it with a good attitude and very muddy sweatpants.

Thank you for giving up your day off to help us put the field to bed for the season. We owe you one (and possibly a load of laundry).

Today is Thank a Farmer Day, and we’d like to thank the ones here at Legacy Farms: our apprentices.

October is a working month on a flower farm. Our apprentices are cutting the last dahlias, pulling spent beds, planting for spring, and keeping the Bouquet Barn stocked. They’re learning a trade, and the farm runs because of the skill and care they bring every day.

If you’ve bought a bouquet from us this season, you’ve seen their work. Thank you to every one of them, and to the staff and mentors who work alongside them.

Fridays on the farm got a little busier yesterday. St. Paul VI High School is back with us after joining us this spring. Two students returned, and five are new to the farm this season. They’re working alongside our Friday Farmers, who have been showing up week after week and know their way around the rows by now. Good to have everyone out here together.
