Come out and support our local first responders at the Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department Open House!

Meet the firefighters, EMTs, and volunteers who serve our community, explore fire engines and emergency vehicles, watch demonstrations, and learn important fire and life-safety tips.

This year is extra special as AVFRD celebrates 82 years of serving the Ashburn community! ❤️

Postpartum is hard especially when you don't know what is happening and you are trying to get used to the new changes that you just went through. If something doesn't feel right, SPEAK UP. Talk to your partner. Your mother, your doctor. If they don't listen, then talk to someone else.

Keep trying until someone does. You are your best advocate because you can tell if something doesn't feel right.

I wish postpartum was talked about more when I was pregnant with my first child. That doctors who were checking our baby's health would talk about mothers mental health or at least give us the resources to let us know more about it.

What to look for.

How it would impact us.

When to look for help.

That would have helped me so much.

Moms please seek help when you are overwhelmed, or something just doesn't feel right. You don't have to figure this out alone.

I don't say that lightly.

I started journaling around October 2023, and it wasn't because I decided I wanted to start a new healthy habit.

It was out of necessity.

I was in a hostile environment, spending a lot of time in my room, and I felt trapped in my own head. There were so many thoughts, emotions, questions and things I needed to say—and I needed somewhere for all of it to go.

So I started writing.

And something happened.

Once I got one thought out of my head and onto paper, it made room for another. I started going down rabbit holes. I started asking why. I started remembering details. I started questioning things I had experienced—even questioning whether some of them had happened the way I remembered them.

Writing gave me a place to unload everything without having to explain myself to anyone else.

And when I went back and read what I had written, I could see my thoughts outside of myself instead of carrying all of them around in my head.

Journaling didn't magically fix everything.

But it gave my mind somewhere to put the weight.

And sometimes, that was exactly what I needed.
