Leesburg, VA (March 20, 2026) – The Town of Leesburg’s Commission on Public Art (COPA), in collaboration with the Airport Commission, is pleased to announce a public art opportunity for the first mural in a planned series of aviation-themed artworks at Leesburg Executive Airport.
This first mural carries the theme “Dream,” representing the beginning of every aviation journey—the moment curiosity about flight first takes hold.
The series is envisioned to expand across multiple hangars, with each mural representing a different stage of the aviation journey. Every installation is designed as a complete, standalone work, with no dependency on future phases. While additional murals are planned, they remain aspirational. The use of DiBond panels, or similar materials, is preferred.
Artists are invited to submit detailed, full-color designs that evoke wonder, possibility, and inspiration while resonating with the diverse community of Loudoun County and the broader Washington, D.C. region. Submissions should draw from the local community, landscape, aviation imagery, and other creative elements that authentically support the theme.
Selected artists or teams will receive $6,000 for design and installation in addition to $4,000 for materials and equipment, to be reimbursed upon submission of receipts.
This call is open to professional artists and artist teams based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. Artists with experience in large-scale outdoor murals are encouraged to apply. Submissions are due by Thursday, May 30 and will be reviewed by both COPA and the Airport Commission before being presented to the Leesburg Town Council for final approval.
