Last time, we shared how our Capstone students jumped right into life on the farm, rain and all. Today we are taking a closer look at the lessons they learned about caring for the land and the living things that help it thrive!

Agriculture is about so much more than planting seeds. It's about learning how every part of the ecosystem works together.

Throughout their Capstone project, our students rolled up their sleeves to tackle real farm challenges. They learned about invasive species like thistle and why it's important to remove them before they spread. They harvested, prepared new growing spaces, and helped care for the land that will feed our community.

Along the way, they also discovered some of the farm's smallest but mightiest helpers. From native pollinators to beneficial insects like ladybugs, students got a firsthand look at the role these creatures play in keeping our gardens healthy and thriving.

By getting their hands dirty and learning directly from the land, our Capstone students gained a deeper appreciation for the teamwork, stewardship, and care that go into sustainable agriculture every day. 🌱🐞

This spring, we were excited to welcome our Senior Capstone students from Rock Ridge HS and John Champe HS to the farm for a hands-on learning experience unlike any classroom can offer!

They kicked off the project by helping clear old brush from our vegetable and flower gardens, making way for a season of growth. The produce grown here will help support the Lucketts Food Pantry, giving students the chance to see how agriculture can directly strengthen the local community.

Of course, farm life doesn't stop for the weather! We started in 55-degree rain, planting sunflowers and getting our hands dirty, and our students never missed a beat. They worked together, pushed through the elements, and truly found their edge. 🌧️

Stay tuned over the next few days as we share more about the incredible projects these students took on around the farm!

Did you know agriculture doesn’t stop at the farm? πŸ‘©β€πŸ³πŸ₯•

On Thursdays at The New Ag School summer program, students explore the culinary side of agriculture by learning how food goes from farm to table. Through hands-on cooking activities and food-based lessons, students gain a deeper understanding of where their food comes from while building confidence in the kitchen.

It’s always a delicious day at camp! Special thanks to the amazing Chef Tony Stafford of Ford's Fish Shack for his wonderful guidance and mentorship over the years!

Part 2 of β€œSave the Blueberry Plants!!” At the New Ag School garden at The Heritage Farm Museum.

3 volunteers came out to help: Sara, Michela and Ping. Yay! Girl power!πŸ’ͺ

We dug up 6 plants to put 3 in the planters.
The planters needed more space in between them than the original spacing of the plants.

Since we had 3 plants remaining after transplanting 3 into the containers, we decided to experiment and plant them in the ground in an area adjacent to the blueberry row.

Stones were unearthed to dig the holes and we amended the soil with the special soil mixture that is more acidic (which blueberry plants love.)

So….6 plants transplanted today ….3 more to go! Stay tuned!
