Troop 982 is a "boy-led" troop, one of the primary BSA troop styles, promoting a safe mentoring environment for the boys to both learn from, and teach each other, a wide variety of skills through practical application and use of the EDGE method interactive learning style.
Dedicated adult leadership, isolated from any committee position, provides guidance and supervision at every meeting and outing and adheres to BSA guidelines of Two-Deep leadership at all times. All leaders adhere to BSA Youth Protection requirements and maintain up-to-date certifications for both YPT and additional trainings, as necessary for troop activities.
Parents
Many parents take part in our vibrant and active Troop Committee. While parents are not required to have a committee position, they are encouraged to join, or simply attend and take part in the discussion. To facilitate participation, meetings are held during regular troop meetings while the boys operate their meeting.
Meetings & Outings
Troop 982 is in Leesburg, Virginia, part of Loudoun County. The Troop meets every Tuesday at 7pm at the Leesburg Community Church located on: 835 Lee Ave SW, Leesburg, VA 20175. The Troop commits to at least one weekend outing a month and 1 patrol event every 6 months. The outings tend to be within 90 minutes of Leesburg, and have ranged from Backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, to a Lock-In at SportRock Climbing Center, to Canoeing on the Potomac. Some longer distance trips have included: Hershey Park, Battleship New Jersey, Green Bank Radio Telescope. A patrol event might be a Patrol Backpacking Trip, a Bike Ride on the W&OD to Monk's BBQ, or a trip to an Escape Room. Almost all the trips and activities are pitched and voted on by the scouts. Once a month, the scouts hold a round table for a portion of their meeting and plan out the following month's meetings and discuss the upcoming 3 months of trips. This approach is pretty unique to Troop 982, and encourages moderation by the scout youth leadership, while encouraging participation by all.
High Adventure & Summer Camp
Troop 982 is proud to say that we are an active High Adventure Troop. There is a standing committee position dedicated to High Adventure, and the troop tries to arrange a High Adventure opportunity each summer. In the past four years, Troop 982 has sent boys to [ Philmont (2017), Sea Base - Bahamas (2018), Summit (2019), Northern Tier (2020)].Troop 982 does summer camp every year, however, scout feedback is very important to the troop and we do not settle for the same camp every year simply because it's what we did last year. Each year, feedback is gathered, options evaluated based on quality, location, and youth opportunities and then presented at the committee meeting, ending in a final vote or consensus.
