Here is what most people do not realize about mentoring:

It does not just change one kid. It changes everything that kid touches for the rest of their life.

A young person who learns emotional regulation at 14 becomes a parent who does not repeat the cycle at 30. A teenager who has one adult believe in them becomes an adult who believes in themselves. A kid who learns to channel anger into creativity becomes a filmmaker, an artist, an entrepreneur.

The Family One is not in the business of quick fixes. We are playing the long game. Every behavioral assessment, every mentoring session, every basketball practice, every film project is a deposit into a future that none of us can fully see yet.

But we trust it. Because we have watched it happen. Over and over. For five years.

Two days until the Give Choose main giving day. Your donation is not charity. It is an investment in the next generation of Loudoun County.

1,800 people.

That is how many showed up to Family Fest last year. Not because we had a massive marketing budget. Not because we bought ads. Because this community believes in what we are building. We have excellent partners that love and support our community.

Family Fest is our signature event, and it is proof that when you create something real, people show up. Families. Mentors. Kids. Neighbors. Local businesses. Everyone comes together for a day that reminds us FAMILY means and why The Family One exists.

But Family Fest is just the tip of the iceberg. Behind those 1,800 smiles are 500+ youth we have served one-on-one. Behavioral assessments. Emotional regulation sessions. Mentoring relationships that last months and years, not just an afternoon.

The community showed up for us. Now we are asking you to show up for the community.

Budget cuts are real. But here is what happened next:

Kids who were being mentored lost their mentors mid-year. Families who were counting on our support had to start over. And our team had to figure out how to keep going without one of our biggest pillars.

We did not shut down. We adapted. We kept serving. But we lost ground, and the kids who fell through the cracks during that transition are the ones we think about every day.

Funding cuts can non stop us from reaching kids who need us.

This is not about an organization surviving. This is about kids who deserve consistency from the adults in their lives.

We need to talk about something that keeps us up at night.

The Family One has a team of 12 trained, dedicated mentors ready to serve. These are the people who consistently raise their hands and say, “I want to be there for a kid who needs me.”

We strive to provide consistency for our mentees however our team has been benched by funding cuts..

Our current economy has hit everyone hard, we lost the infrastructure that kept our mentors matched with students. The mentors are still here. The kids still need them. But without funding, it is difficult to make the connections.

Our mentors. Ready to go. Waiting for the resources to get back in the game.

That is what Give Choose can fix.

Your donation does not disappear into overhead. It puts a caring adult back in the life of a young person who is waiting for someone to show up.

It was incredible to see so many local nonprofits come together for this special recognition, a true reflection of the organizations that make our community a great place to grow up and grow old.

People ask us all the time: “So what does The Family One actually do?”

Here is the real answer:

Athletics — Team sports that teach discipline, trust, and how to handle losing without losing yourself.

Short Film Project — Kids write, direct, and produce their own films. They learn to tell their story instead of letting someone else tell it for them.

Arts — Creative expression for young people who have never had a safe space to create.

STEAM — Science, technology, engineering, arts, and math programming that opens doors kids did not know existed.

Workforce Development — Real-world skills for teens and young adults who are ready to build a future.

And underneath all of it: behavioral assessments, emotional regulation, encouragement, and deep mentoring. Not therapy. Not clinical treatment. Just consistent, caring adults helping young people figure out who they are.

They come to us from everywhere.

Parents who see their child struggling and do not know what to do. Teachers who notice a student shutting down. Social workers looking for a safe landing spot. Courts and juvenile detention centers hoping for a second chance.

The youth we serve at The Family One are not statistics. They are kids who need someone to believe in them. Someone to sit with them when things get hard. Someone to teach them that their emotions are not the enemy and that they have more inside them than they know.

We do not replace families. We strengthen them. We are the extra set of hands, the steady voice, the adult who keeps showing up even when the kid pushes back.

No clinical degrees. No fancy office. Just Benjamin Blakley and Derrick Veney deciding that caring was enough of a qualification.

That was 2021.

Since then, The Family One has served over 500 youth through mentoring, athletics, arts, STEAM, workforce development, and a whole lot of showing up when it mattered most.

This month, we need YOUR help to keep going.

Give Choose runs March 15-24, and every dollar you give goes directly to keeping our programs alive and our mentors in the lives of kids who are counting on them.
