TACF is hiring both a Mid-Atlantic and Southern Regional Science Coordinator! Support volunteer-led science programs, work hands-on with chestnut restoration, and connect regional chapters with national research efforts. If you have experience with tree breeding and selection programs, leading volunteer events, orchard management, or are passionate about the return of American chestnut to its native range, we encourage you to apply. Danny met me today with his bucket truck to harvest the last remaining control pollinated burs at Lesesne State Forest.

Summer intern highlight : we are so grateful for our two VATACF interns this summer, Alisa and Vinny!
They were instrumental in collecting DNA leaf samples, assisting with pollination season, and conducting their own research projects. We will miss you!

Why do we infect chestnut trees on purpose?
Because if we want to bring back the American chestnut, we need to know which trees can survive the blight.
Inoculation lets us do just that. By introducing the fungus in a controlled way, we can observe how each tree responds—and identify the ones with natural resistance.
Some tests are fast (small stem assay). Others take months (large stem assay). But each one gives us vital data that moves the restoration forward.
We do it for the future forest.
We do it for the tree that once ruled the ridge.
