Public figures who share their Type 1 diabetes journeys do more than tell a story—they smash stigma and spark vital awareness. Their openness builds community and gives others the strength to manage their own diagnosis.
As a small nonprofit, we know how much those famous voices matter. For 19 years, Kids With Courage has helped families navigate the darkest days of diagnosis, changed the narrative around what life with Type 1 can look like, and worked to improve outcomes for children fighting this relentless disease.
Recently, two prominent figures used their platforms to speak out:
Bret Michaels: The iconic rock musician, diagnosed with Type 1 at age six, recently shared on Facebook that a diagnosis forces a choice: succumb to being a victim or choose to be victorious. It's hard, But the one thing that helped him was his parents, sisters, family and friends. Although they did not understand the disease, as it is unbelievably complicated and a daily balance, the one thing they knew was to motivate me to go the extra mile and be prepared to achieve things. But true warriors find a way to have fun and get it done. Keeping spirits high is of great importance.
Alexander Zverev: The professional tennis star, who recently captured the US Open Men's Singles title, was diagnosed at age four and defies the odds every day at the professional level. He credits his mother for refusing to let his diagnosis stand in the way of him following his dreams. Alexander now uses his platform and his foundation to bring life-saving insulin, medical care, and support to children in need around the world.
