From Fran on the board of American Friends of PHF. "While we are all aware of the genocide in Gaza, less public is what's going on in the West Bank. Nablus, where the Palestinian House of Friendship is located, is completely surrounded by the Israeli army, literally with gates around the city so people can't get in and out. Israel’s Minister of Security has formed his own armed police force of settlers. This in from my dear friend Mohammed yesterday:
Today a group of Israeli settlers decided to hold a wedding at the Tomb of Joseph in Nablus close to the Balata refugee camp. The choice of location was just to harass the Palestinians in the neighborhood - the settlers had so many guns. It may have even been a fake wedding because who would want all those guns at their wedding.
The streets of Nablus are full of homeless people because of the settler attacks on the Balata refugee camp, and there is no place for them to go. PHF feels an obligation to help them, and so do other families in the neighborhood. Many are taking the refugees into their homes.
The PA (Palestinian Authority) is close to financial collapse, since Israel is retaining almost a billion dollars worth of import taxes owed to the PA. The EU confirms this information and states that the West Bank is close to a state of economic chaos.
Last night settlers fired on the olive groves one kilometer away from my neighborhood, we could smell the smoke. The settlers are expanding their pastoral reach, confiscating land, seeds, and cattle. In the village of Burka, just north of Ramallah, they burned 80 Palestinian cars this week. It is a "war of fire”.
The Bedouin village of Nasariyah has asked PHF to run a summer camp for their children in August, and university students are helping to organize it. This is the first time PHF has had a program for Bedouin children. PHF is also running two small neighborhood camps for children in Nablus and Asira. No one is safe but we have to do this. The Bedouins are a special target group for settlers.
The family of a dead man tried to take him back for burial to his home village of Bureen, just 15 minutes from Nablus, but they were held up at a checkpoint for six hours, and in the end only his immediate family was allowed to go through.
Food and gasoline are scarce; starvation looms. PHF continues to distribute Boxes of Love - boxes which the American Friends of PHF help local donors fill by supporting PHF financially, but the need far exceeds the supplies. PHF organizes neighborhood by neighborhood to help people prepare for and cope with the increasing crisis, and continues to offer children’s activities in lieu of larger summer camps that they have done in the past.
