The American Friends of the Palestinian House of Friendship invite you to join a Zoom conversation with Palestinian House of Friendship Founder and co-director, Mohammed Sawalha, and his son, co-director, Majed Sawalha, on Sunday October 5,2025, 4-5pm EDT.

Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/voices-from-the-west-bank-tickets-1672094572879?aff=oddtdtcreator

Mohammed and Majed will be sharing what is happening on the ground in the West Bank, and what PHF is doing to continue to support the children and families of Nablus and the surrounding area. What is happening is horrific, and yet Mohammed and Majed are hopeful, and you will be no doubt inspired to continue to be hopeful and take action. PHF’s top priority is education and psychological support for children who must continue learning and as Mohammed says, “taste happiness.” They have distributed more than 100 school bags filled with books, pencils and pens, and crayons for elementary school children and are doing everything they can in the face of relentless attacks.

Here is a snapshot of what Palestinian are facing on the West Bank:

• There are thousands of military checkpoints set up in Nablus; to travel to Asira, Mohammed’s home village, 7 miles from Nablus, it can take 6 hours;

• There is a “silent annexation” going on right now as thousands more illegal settlers are moving into the West Bank.

• Schools in Nablus are closed because it is too dangerous to venture out. The Israeli army is patrolling the streets, evacuating families from their homes, randomly shooting and killing civilians, and kidnapping people.

• It is harvest season, and settlers have been uprooting and burning thousands of olive trees, which has a devastating effect on Palestinians’ ability to make a living.

Thanks for joining us on Sunday, October 5.

From Fran on the board of American Friends of PHF. "While we are all aware of the genocide in Gaza, less public is what's going on in the West Bank. Nablus, where the Palestinian House of Friendship is located, is completely surrounded by the Israeli army, literally with gates around the city so people can't get in and out. Israel’s Minister of Security has formed his own armed police force of settlers. This in from my dear friend Mohammed yesterday:
Today a group of Israeli settlers decided to hold a wedding at the Tomb of Joseph in Nablus close to the Balata refugee camp. The choice of location was just to harass the Palestinians in the neighborhood - the settlers had so many guns. It may have even been a fake wedding because who would want all those guns at their wedding.
The streets of Nablus are full of homeless people because of the settler attacks on the Balata refugee camp, and there is no place for them to go. PHF feels an obligation to help them, and so do other families in the neighborhood. Many are taking the refugees into their homes.
The PA (Palestinian Authority) is close to financial collapse, since Israel is retaining almost a billion dollars worth of import taxes owed to the PA. The EU confirms this information and states that the West Bank is close to a state of economic chaos.
Last night settlers fired on the olive groves one kilometer away from my neighborhood, we could smell the smoke. The settlers are expanding their pastoral reach, confiscating land, seeds, and cattle. In the village of Burka, just north of Ramallah, they burned 80 Palestinian cars this week. It is a "war of fire”.
The Bedouin village of Nasariyah has asked PHF to run a summer camp for their children in August, and university students are helping to organize it. This is the first time PHF has had a program for Bedouin children. PHF is also running two small neighborhood camps for children in Nablus and Asira. No one is safe but we have to do this. The Bedouins are a special target group for settlers.
The family of a dead man tried to take him back for burial to his home village of Bureen, just 15 minutes from Nablus, but they were held up at a checkpoint for six hours, and in the end only his immediate family was allowed to go through.
Food and gasoline are scarce; starvation looms. PHF continues to distribute Boxes of Love - boxes which the American Friends of PHF help local donors fill by supporting PHF financially, but the need far exceeds the supplies. PHF organizes neighborhood by neighborhood to help people prepare for and cope with the increasing crisis, and continues to offer children’s activities in lieu of larger summer camps that they have done in the past.

The American Friends of the Palestinian House of Friendship invite you to join a Zoom conversation with Palestinian House of Friendship (PHF) Founder and co-director, Mohammed Sawalha, and his son co-director, Majed Sawalha, on Sunday April 6, 4-5pm EST. Reserve your spot here. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/voices-from-the-west-bank-tickets-1299587554359?aff=oddtdtcreator
While Israel has resumed its genocide in Gaza, it has also re-occupied the West Bank, all with Trump’s approval. PHF is in the city of Nablus, which is under siege by the Israeli military and settlers. Tanks and bulldozers are within city limits. The military has already forced 40,000 Palestinians from their homes in refugee camps in Jenin and Tulkarem, just outside of Nablus, and this week the military moved into another refugee camp, Al Ain, and took over 75 families’ homes, kicking them out with only the clothes on their backs. Al Ain is in Nablus, literally two minutes from PHF’s offices.

According to Mohammed, the threats of expulsion from their homes and their very existence as Palestinians are the worst they have ever experienced.

On April 6 you will hear directly from Mohammed and Majed about what is happening on the ground in the West Bank, and how the Palestinian House of Friendship is responding. PHF is using their network of hundreds of volunteers throughout Nablus to feed and provide emotional support to their community. The World Village Café, located In their offices, provide respite to medical students; the music studio provides space for young people to express themselves, and PHF is also providing classes in art and dance. As we in the United States are learning, we must be emotionally nourished and find strength in community even under the threat of fascism.

We are so grateful to our broad community here in the US and elsewhere for its generosity over the years and especially since October 7. We have literally provided the funds upon which PHF’s community in Nablus depends; 75% of NGOs have had to close their doors. If you cannot join us on April 6 and want to make a donation, please do so here.

Please sign up here to join us on April 6 to learn about the current situation, including how we can provide support and care for this beleaguered community. If you can't join us and would like to make a donation to our "Boxes of Love" campaign, please click here.Thank you!

American Friends of PHF member is guest writer in Gazette. Read below. Amid the rockets flying overhead between Israel and Iran, the ongoing horrific war in Gaza, violent incursions by illegal Israeli settlers, uprooting of ancient olive trees, home demolitions, destruction of local infrastructure, and random shooting of young men who live on the West Bank, the Palestinian House of Friendship (PHF) is pulling off a miracle.

Mohammed Sawalha, founder and director of PHF, has visited Northampton many times over the past 20 years to raise funds for PHF’s summer camps, after-school programs, skateboard park, and music studio. Now he has developed a program for adults that he calls Building a New Democratic Society.

In spite of the fact that the West Bank has been under Israeli military occupation for 57 years, since 1967, and there have been no elections in Palestine since 2006, Sawalha has organized a series of workshops that engage participants in the components of a vibrant civil society.
