Leechburg Elks Bring Drug Awareness Program to Leechburg Elementary School
For schools all over the United States the last week of October is Red Ribbon Week.. The Red Ribbons worn during this celebration are a symbol of unity against the illegal use of drugs. This public display came about in response to the tragic 1985 murder of Federal Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena while he was investigating Mexican drug traffickers. At that time, angry parent groups and others began wearing red ribbons to take a public stand against the illegal use of alcohol, to***co and other drugs and to show their support for drug-free youth. Major Anthony Shea Jr, USAF/Ret, Leechburg Elks Drug Awareness Chairman recently presented a Drug Awareness assembly at Leechburg Elementary School for the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Armsrong County Detective Mark Heider from the Armstrong County District Attorney's office and Drug Dog' Mibo along with Carrie Bence from the Armstron g/ Indiana Drug and Alcohol Commission were featured as speakers. . Approximately 200 students participated in the assembly. Each child received a red ribbon, a Drug Awareness coloring book, a Drug Awareness book mark and pencil, and a candy treats..The children were given valuable information on the effects of drugs on their bodies and their futures and were given the opportunity to have their questions concerning drugs answered by those professionals who deal with the results of drug use on a daily basis. These students along with students in the third, seventh, and eighth grades, were also invited to participate in the Elks Drug Awareness Poster and Essay Contests. This years theme for both contests is “Choose to be Drug Free—You’re Never Alone". . II*s never too soon to start talking to your child about drugs, alcohol and to***co and the Poster and Essay Contests are really good opportunities for parents to begin a dialogue with their child about the dangers of these substances.
