Today and tomorrow, members of our department are taking an important step in protecting their health by participating in esophageal cancer screening — including members of our career and volunteer forces, as well as retired department members.
Firefighters have a 62% higher risk of developing esophageal cancer. Our work can expose us to smoke, chemicals and other carcinogens, making proactive health care and early detection especially important.
We’re proud that this screening opportunity was made possible through a grant received through the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA), helping provide our members with access to important preventative health services.
Taking care of each other means taking the risks of this job seriously — and making sure those who have served, are serving, and volunteer their time have opportunities to take care of themselves, too.
