Great Horned Owls 🦉 are nocturnal creatures that occasionally use tufa towers as a roosting spot during the day. It's easy to see why an owl would choose this spot. We barely noticed the bird! 👀

Summer flew by in the Mono Basin! Here are a few favorite moments from the season ☀
Out in the field, seasonal staff waded into Mono Lake for alkali fly research and visited remote parts of the Mono Basin to repair Motus infrastructure. Canoe days were highlighted by dazzling phalarope displays. And every day was punctuated with a South Tufa tour. Also, here's a behind-the-scenes look into canoe safety training.

Thank you all for an amazing summer!

Today is Mono Lake Day, the anniversary of the California State Water Resources Control Board's decision in 1994 mandating that Mono Lake be protected at a healthy level of 6,392 feet above sea level. The lake is still ten feet too low and long overdue in reaching the healthy level.

But the story isn't over and the plot is just getting good! Last spring, State Water Board members agreed: a formal, decision-making hearing about DWP water diversions is necessary, this year. And after a summer of workshops highlighting the Mono Basin's threatened public trust resources, the momentum is building for Mono Lake.

Stay up to date with all things Mono Lake on our website, monolake.org. The best is yet to come!
