our story
Sullivan’s Toy Run is a 501c3 non-profit organization that honors a special little boy. Through donations and fundraising events we provide toys and gift cards, as well as updated electronics and gaming systems to hospitals, and families of children undergoing severe medical treatment. We started with a toy drive on February 4, 2018 when our son Sullivan passed away from complications of cancer. At his funeral service we honored him by collecting toys for the hospital that treated him: Yale New Haven Childrens Hospital. We celebrated his life with Disney music, a balloon artist, face painting, goody bags (his favorite party tradition), cupcakes, and lollipops. Afterwards we threw a big birthday party for him because he passed away so close to his seventh birthday.
Sullivan began his battle with an extremely rare form of brain cancer called Medulloepithelioma in February of 2017. To complicate an already rare condition was the fact that his brain tumor was actually in his pelvis (how does that work?). Sullivan experienced hundreds of tests, chemotherapy, radiation treatments, multiple surgeries, countless ER visits and hospital stays. Throughout all of that, he managed to keep his spirits up with the help of Child Life Specialists. The Child Life Specialists work together throughout the hospital helping children understand what is going on around them, and TO them. Whether it is major stuff like chemotherapy or surgery, or just a CT scan or MRI, they provide the child and family visual aids, education on each procedure, and entertainment and toys to help keep their spirits up and their minds in a positive space. The medical side of treatment is only half the battle when you are healing, and we found that the treatments were a little easier when Sullivan wasn't depressed about being sick all the time, losing his hair, or being hospitalized for long periods of time.
Having such unusual and eclectic taste, the child life specialists had to purchase and order things specifically suited to his tastes. They always went above and beyond to provide amusement every time we were admitted. They brought snow from outside, into our room to build a snowman once. Another time they filled syringes with paint and taped paper floor to ceiling in his room for him to splatter paint on. We managed to have a lot of good times, while being stuck in those rooms, in the midst of a terrible situation. We owe all of that to the Child Life Specialists. So, for us it only seemed appropriate to payback all those experiences with new ones, for other children going through treatments.
We hope to continue to provide the hospital with the necessary tools they need to help both the child and families. We take donations of new wrapped toys, all gift cards, and monetary donations. By following Sullivans Toy Run, you will stay up today on all of our fun upcoming events.
