Good morning Tribe.

Fun fact: did you know, Horses only sleep for a total of about three hours a day on average, and most of that isn’t even all at once.

They rest a little, get up, check their surroundings, eat some grass, and go right back to being horses.

Now, before we all start using that as an excuse to survive on three hours of sleep, I think there’s a lesson there.

Horses don’t waste much time worrying about yesterday or borrowing trouble from tomorrow.

They wake up, eat, move, rest when needed, and keep going.

Maybe today doesn’t need a grand plan. Maybe it just needs breakfast, a little fresh air, a few laughs, and less worry that we are getting it all done today.

Happy Father’s Day from all of us at Veterans Equine Therapeutic Services.

Being a good father means showing up with patience, guiding with calm, and having the courage to be gentle. Just like the bond between a veteran and their horse, fatherhood is built on trust, consistency, and heart.

Today we honor the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures who teach us that real strength is steady, kind, and present. Thank you for all you do.

Veterans Equine Therapeutic Services had a lovely morning at the barn with our equine partners Beau, Cappy, Gump, and Sparrow. We explored the concept that horses are naturally inclined to be in a state of fight or flight, and the strong winds this morning made it particularly challenging for them to process their surroundings, increasing their instinct to flee. In such situations, handlers must reflect on whether they have earned the horse's trust and are acting in the horse's best interest. As the horse's partner, the handler's role is to provide support and reassurance. Horses continually assess their handler's demeanor, looking for cues to determine their own response to stressful situations. If the handler remains calm, the horse is more likely to do so as well. Lead Instructor Thor led our class through a series of exercises designed to simulate stressful conditions, allowing handlers to work in tandem with their equine partners to build trust and confidence. This training is invaluable for strengthening the bond between horse and handler. We at Veterans Equine Therapeutic Services believe the flag represents more than stars and stripes. It stands for courage, sacrifice, and the promise we make to those who served.

On Flag Day, we’re reminded that freedom isn’t free — it’s carried on the shoulders of veterans, first responders, and the families who stand with them. At V.E.T.S., we see that promise in action every day in the arena, on the trails, and in the quiet moments of healing.

Today, we honor Old Glory and the people who give it meaning. Fly it proudly. 🇺🇸

Veterans Equine Therapeutic Services had a productive morning at the barn with our equine partners, Willow and Cappy. Our day began with grooming, followed by discussions on the stewardship and responsibility once we pick up the lead rope. Throughout our sessions, we rely heavily on nonverbal cues to communicate effectively with our equine partners, fostering trust and building a strong partnership. A key takeaway from our morning session was the importance of establishing a mutually beneficial partnership, ensuring that our equine partners are better off after each session than when we started. Today is for those in the trenches. The ones fighting pain, health issues, financial stress, broken relationships, or battles nobody else can see.

It’s easy to talk about strength when life is going well, but real strength is getting up when life is kicking your ass and moving forward anyway.

And and for those that need to hear it, sometimes, real strength is asking for help.

Not for attention. Not for sympathy. Just a quiet conversation. A hand when you need one. A burden shared for a little while.

You are part of a tribe, and the Tribe understands something important: needing help isn’t weakness, and it isn’t a label you’ll wear for the rest of your life.

Your difficult season is not your identity.

Also know, What is shared in trust stays in trust. No spotlight. No gossip. No scarlet letter.

Just people helping people get through hard times.

If you’re carrying something heavy today, know that you don’t have to carry it alone.

We see you. We respect you. We’re here if you need us.

Veterans Equine Therapeutic Services was proud to support Troop 16 of Ledyard, Connecticut, by providing an introduction to the sport of archery for 24 local Scouts.

The class was conducted at Heritage Hill Farm in Ledyard and was led by Thor Torgersen, Executive Director and Lead Archery Instructor, with assistance from Board President Pat Sullivan, Tom Montgomery, and Cassandra Daley.

Throughout the session, Scouts learned the fundamentals of archery, including range safety, proper shooting techniques, equipment handling, and the discipline and focus that archery helps develop.

This event represents an important part of the V.E.T.S. mission—serving not only veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, and their families, but also giving back to the communities that support them. We believe that leadership, confidence, responsibility, and service are values worth passing on to the next generation.

A special thank you to Troop 16 for spending the day with us, and to Heritage Hill Farm for providing a beautiful location for this program.
