JROTC Luncheon May 9, 2024

Last week, MOAA Citrus County presented scholarship awards to three outstanding JROTC cadets, one from each of our Citrus County high schools. The scholarships celebrate each cadet’s achievements and will support their future education and military service. Sam Himmel, Citrus County School Superintendent was our keynote speaker. The ceremony was awe-inspiring, ending with a formal salute to Veterans in attendance, who stood and returned the cadets’ salute.

Cadet Major Avreigh R. Maddox (Army JROTC, Lecanto High School) – Cadet Major Maddox will attend the University of West Florida, where she will study finance and be a member of the Air Force ROTC unit. LTC David Brown, USA (Ret.) is senior JROTC instructor. (Evelyn H. Reading $1,500 Scholarship.)

Cadet Lieutenant Allysa Watt (Air Force JROTC, Citrus County High School) – Cadet Lt. Watts will attend Nova Southeastern. MSgt Eric Brown, USAF (Ret.) is senior JROTC instructor. (Evelyn H. Reading $1,500 Scholarship.)

Cadet LCDR Orlando Mercado – Cadet CDR Mercado will attend Jacksonville University, where he will study electrical engineering and be a member of the Naval ROTC program (Objective: Submarines). CWO5 Liz Rivera, USN (Ret.) is senior JROTC instructor. (CDR Bud Wise, USN, Ret. $1,500. Scholarship.)

A special thanks to:

• “Sam” Himmel, Citrus County School Superintendent – Keynote speaker.

I was honored to present the keynote address at the Knights of Columbus, Father James Hoge Assembly 1547, 53rd Annual Charity Ball! The proceeds of the well attended event supported the Citrus County Veterans Coalition and the Citrus County Veterans Foundation.

It was wonderful to see Congressman Hon. Gus Bilirakis, Sheriff Mike Prendergast who was the Master of Ceremonies, and County Commissioner Diana Finegan and her husband Steve, John McGee, Curt and Mari-Elain Ebitz in attendance among so many other friends.

Thank you for such a wonderful event and the gracious invitation!
