🔥🍖 It’s Battle of the BBQ day in Boone County!

We love seeing our community come together to support one another, and the Boone County Cancer Society’s 19th Annual Battle of the BBQ is a wonderful example of what makes Boone County so special.

Today, local teams are firing up their smokers and grills to raise funds that go directly toward helping cancer patients right here in Boone County. Along with plenty of delicious BBQ, the event features live music, raffles, community booths and more.

At Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center, we know how powerful a caring, connected community can be. We’re proud to cheer on our friends at the Boone County Cancer Society and everyone who gives their time, talents and support to make a difference for local families. 💙

💙 What an incredible evening at Whitestown’s National Night Out! 🚔

A huge thank you to the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department for inviting Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center to be part of such an amazing community event. We are always grateful for opportunities like this to connect with families, community partners, and the incredible first responders who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

Tonight also marked the debut of our very first Safety Paws coloring book! 🐾
This special project features nearly every K-9 partner serving Boone County, along with fun activities, important child safety tips, and information about the services we provide at Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center. Seeing so many children excited to meet the K-9s while taking home a resource they can enjoy was truly rewarding!

Throughout the evening, we had the opportunity to talk with parents about child abuse prevention, explaining what it is that we do at Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center, discuss online safety, and navigating the ever-changing (and sometimes scary!) world of technology. We also shared ways to volunteer, support our mission, and become involved in protecting children in our community.

Events like National Night Out remind us just how important community partnerships are. They not only bring neighbors together but also help spread awareness, provide education, and connect families with valuable resources that can make a lasting difference.

Thank you again to the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department for your hospitality and for hosting such a wonderful event. We can’t wait to see everyone again next year! 🐾

Honoring Sylvia’s Legacy.
Protecting Today’s Children.

There are moments that remind us why we do this work, and this is certainly one of them.

On behalf of everyone at Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ashton Gleckman and the entire Sylvia production team for their extraordinary generosity and dedication.

Through the opening night premiere and second screening of Sylvia, Ashton and their team graciously donated $750 in proceeds to Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center. This generous gift will help us continue providing hope, healing, advocacy, and support to the children and families we serve every single day.

While many people know Sylvia Likens because of the tragedy she endured, this film reminds us that she was so much more than what happened to her. Sylvia was a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a young girl who loved deeply, cared for those around her, and deserved the chance to grow up. Thank you for allowing the world to see Sylvia through the eyes of those who loved her and for restoring the humanity that history so often overlooks.

Ashton, thank you for the countless hours of research, the conversations, the miles traveled, and the passion you poured into telling Sylvia’s story with dignity, compassion, and truth. Your commitment to preserving her legacy while raising awareness for child abuse prevention is nothing short of remarkable.

Because of storytellers like you, Sylvia’s voice continues to be heard nearly six decades later. Her story is no longer only one of unimaginable loss, it is also a call to action. A reminder that every child deserves to be safe, believed, protected, and loved.

We are incredibly proud of everything you and your team have accomplished, and we are deeply honored to carry Sylvia’s name as we work each day to ensure that children in our community have someone to stand beside them during their darkest moments.

Thank you for helping turn Sylvia’s legacy into one of hope, healing, education, and advocacy.

Together, we remember Sylvia. Not only for the life that was taken far too soon, but for the lives that continue to be protected because her story refuses to be forgotten.

Tonight we had the privilege of attending the premiere of “Sylvia,” the powerful documentary by Indiana filmmaker Ashton Gleckman at the Indy Shorts International Film Festival.

It was an emotional and unforgettable reminder of why the work of child advocacy matters.

In 1965, 16-year-old Sylvia Likens endured months of horrific abuse before losing her life in Indianapolis. What makes her story even more heartbreaking is that many people saw warning signs or heard her cries for help, but no one intervened. Sylvia’s story forever changed Indiana, helping inspire laws that require every Hoosier to report suspected child abuse or neglect. Today, Indiana remains one of only 18 states where every person, not just teachers, doctors, or other professionals, is a mandated reporter. If you reasonably suspect a child is being abused or neglected, you have a legal duty to report it. (Sylvia Film⁠)

In 2016, the Boone County Child Advocacy Center was renamed Sylvia’s Child Advocacy Center in Sylvia’s honor. Her legacy is lived on through our mission to ensure children are heard, believed, protected, and surrounded by a team dedicated to helping them heal after abuse.
