Hey, just a reminder that our next meeting is this Saturday July 14th, 2-4pm. Hope you can make it!

Remember this week we will be meeting on SATURDAY, June 9th, from 2-4pm. It's our first meeting with the new day and time, so I hope it works out for everyone. See you there!

At our last meeting on May 18th, we continued watching Madoka Magica, making it to episode 10. I love that episode! Homura is so awesome! The series really is all about Homura and her love for Madoka. It's so bittersweet to see her motivation and how hard she tries without Madoka having any idea in this timeline. They are a fascinating pair.

Kyubey continues to be chillingly unfeeling, but I still love him and his mascot cuteness. I really wish we could see his true form in the series. If his alien race presumably took this cute form to best appeal to teenage girls, what do they really look like? Or are they like Nibbler in Futurama, doomed to be cute even if they mean serious business?

Watching Sayaka's descent was sad, even if her stubbornness caused a lot of the communication problems the group had. (Why does no one listen to Homura-chan? Why?) I challenge anyone to keep a dry eye when she turns to the camera and chokes out "I was stupid...so stupid," right before she explodes into a grief seed. The swirling colors of the water and the music really made for a beautiful and dramatic moment. I think Sayaka, or Oktavia von Seckendorff, has the best witch design, although I really liked Charlotte as well. The mermaid knight is just too cool, and keeps with her magical girl design. I love the musical staffs and notes in her runic font. I arrived too late to the fandom to work on cracking the rune code myself, but my hat is off to everyone who did. Such a cool project!

So to throw out a question this week, what do you think is the coolest artistic element of Madoka Magica? It could be a character, a scene, anything. We're switching to Saturdays in June, so our next meeting is June 9th, 2-4pm. See you there!

On May 4th we had some variety watching the first episode of Sgt. Frog before switching back to two more of Madoka Magica. Sgt. Frog is one of my favorite series (you might have guessed from our banner) and it's always fun to rewatch. I remember when the manga first came out here in 2004, I didn't buy it right away because I thought it looked like a kid's manga. (See below.)

After hearing more about it I actually picked it up and was immediately hooked by the scene in which the kids string up the alien invader frog Keroro and he croaks, "I'm not an alien, I'm just a normal Pokopenian frog with too many growth hormones and a touch of wit!" Genius. It's like the Japanese Invader Zim. (At least until Panty and Stocking reimagined GIR, I guess.) The anime is a little more kid-friendly than the manga, but despite loving English dubs and liking the casting, I actually don't really care for the dub that much. It's been well-received every time I've read reviews, but somehow the American pop culture references just date it too much for me. Leave me a comment and let me know your opinion on the best English and Japanese dubs--dubs you love, dubs you hate, and dubs that disappointed you for one reason or another. Our next meeting is tomorrow, May 18th, 4-6pm. See you!

Description:Sergeant Keroro is the Captain of the Space Invasion Forces Special Advance Team of the 58th Planet of the Gamma Storm Cloud System, sent to the planet Pokopen (aka Earth) to collect intelligence for his planet's invasion force. He's also a frog. After his ship crash-lands in the plane...

We've got club today at 4pm. Hope to see you there!

On April 20th we watched another episode of Madoka, then mixed it up with my favorite anime series of all time, Slayers Next. To wax nostalgic for a moment, Slayers was the first anime I ever saw, and I don't think anything will ever top it for me. It has the perfect mix of D&D-style adventure, comedy (I still laugh at the food jokes, every time), the golden harmony of the group of four characters, a spectacular English dub, a great Japanese dub with songs by Megumi Hayashibara, and a satisfying climax each season that resonates with all the more poignancy because of the juxtaposition of serious drama with the normal light-hearted tone. Second season Slayers Next is the best of the three seasons, and quite possibly the pinnacle of animated achievement. Disagree? Leave me a comment. What is your favorite series, and why? What was the first anime you watched, and what are your thoughts on it now? Don't forget to join us at club next time, too, on May 4th from 4-6pm!

We've had lots of new faces this month, so welcome to our new members! I hope everyone will continue to be able to attend. On April 6th we watched episodes 4-6 of Madoka Magica. Madoka still hasn't become a magical girl. I think Sayaka has the coolest magical girl costume--she looks like a knight in a fantasy series. Although I loved the steampunk quality to Mami's outfit too. One of the highlights for me was Kyubey pondering why humans are so particular about their souls in his creepily cute manner, and his almost gleeful emotional torture of the girls. I was thinking about how they might do things in a live action version, and hoped that if they made one it would be delightfully low-budget. Has anyone seen live action Sailor Moon? It is amazing. For Luna, the cute magical cat mascot, they actually used a stuffed toy version of her and filmed it, sometimes shaking her or adding effects for her eyes. I can only imagine a stuffed Kyubey going through the same treatment.

I appreciate everyone's input on favorite series and shows we should watch next. I'll make a poll for our next meeting. Leave me a comment, and let me know if you prefer watching single episodes of different shows or whole series at a time, and if you prefer English or Japanese audio. My inclination is to do one or two episodes of a series and then some new episodes each meeting, but let me know your thoughts. The major downside to whole series is that it might not always be one you like--I think I stopped going to my college anime club when I had to sit through too many episodes of Samurai 7 and Please Teacher.

Don't forget to come tomorrow on April 20th, 4-6pm. See you there!

04/06/2012

It's been a long break with the end of the month, but I hope everyone's ready for our next meeting tomorrow on April 6th, from 4-6pm. I'm looking forward to it!

This week we had a lively session with some different shows. First we watched Captain Harlock, Leiji Matsumoto's iconic space epic. I've always wanted to see it, so I'm thrilled we got the chance! Now I can recognize its many influences on later series, from space piracy to the design of Harlock himself. Awesome stuff. We also watched an episode of the modern incarnation of the space opera in Bodacious Space Pirates. It was pretty fun, with very nice animation in character design, colors, and the touches of futuristic technology. And it even had a line quoted from Captain Harlock! The more you know.

Thanks to everyone for indulging my love of another classic, Saint Seiya. I love my old school anime! The 70s and 80s rock, but they're so underrated with fans today. I hope we can watch more in the future.

Our next meeting is Friday April 6th, 4-6pm, so come join us! It'd be great if I could get some more input about what titles you'd like to see the library purchase for our anime collection, be they old favorites or new releases.
